Ovarian cyst removal

I had a laparotomy just over 2 weeks ago for what I was told was likely to be a dermoid cyst which had destroyed my left ovary. I had both the ovary and tube removed. I've been under the care of the gyne oncologist lead at my local hospital, due to the size they couldn't get a clear image so couldn't definitely rule out cancer but I was assured it was very unlikely to be at my age (31).

On discharge from hospital I was told that they would write to me with the histology and only arrange a follow up appointment if required. After 5pm today I received an emailed appointment letter for an app with my consultant for next Monday and now, for the first time, I'm actually worried that I do have cancer.

I'm just wondering if anyone else who has had similar surgery had an appointment to discuss benign histology results rather than just getting these by letter?

Not exactly the same. But I was invited in to discuss what oncologists from another hospital had decided after they had seen an MRI of my cysts. They fed back that it looked unlikely to be cancer based on the images and a long time later, after surgery and a biopsy, cancer was ruled out.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a cause for concern that they have invited you in. I have been invited in for all sorts of minor stuff that didn’t seem like it had to be done face to face. Half the time they send the invite letter before they have worked out what the appointment is for, to prompt the consultant to look at the papers. They may also have some after surgery follow up care to provide etc and may need to examine you.

I understand it’s nerve-wracking. All best for your appointment and recovery after your surgery.

Thanks for your reply, that's reassuring and I'm glad to hear cancer was eventually ruled out for you. I've not been worried throughout this whole process until now as I knew It was highly unlikely that it was anything sinister, and I was just expecting a posted histology report to confirm that it was a benign dermoid.

Im going to just try and keep my mind off it. I feel physically ok so thinking of returning to work next week which will be a welcome distraction.

Good plan! Enjoy the sunshine if you can.

Hi, @ItWasTheBestOfTimes , I'm currently in a similar situation waiting biopsy results after having my left ovary with cyst out. I've been called in on Friday to see consultant and I'm freaking out a little. Did your appointment go okay?

Hi @uliya123 yes it was fine, they confirmed it was a large dermoid. I was in the appointment for literally 10 seconds. I did point out that I was told in hospital (by a different gyne consultant who did the ward round and my discharge) that I would only need to come back in if it was bad news and had been worrying. He said this was wrong and they would always arrange an appointment to discuss biopsy results, so fingers crossed for you that it's also good news.
