Anyone with Vit B12 deficiency?

Got some blood test results back today showing B12 deficiency. I don't have the numbers yet as you have to talk to the GP for that and the results I got today were via the receptionist. It would explain being knackered and glum but then so would probably being menopausal (I'm 48 but have the coil so no periods anyway).
Anyone know if this is a big deal? Obviously I will be speaking to GP but appointment isn't for another 2 weeks, so just curious if anyone had any insight!

I have B12 deficiency too. I was already taking supplements, and my diet is rich in it, so injections was recommended.
In my case, a hard no as I have severe needle phobia. I use a spray that is absorbed under the tongue. There are patches too.
Just to add, I never had any symptoms. I know a lady who has PA, and she feels like death when her injection is due. She buys the needles and ampules online and does it herself. A lot of people resorted to that during Covid as GPs stopped doing them.

Did you find out what your levels were op?
I have so many b12 deficiency symptoms yet according to my gp my levels are normal and no action is required.
My b12 is 289 (says normal levels are between 197-771). My friend has levels at 189 and has been diagnosed with deficiency and is having injections at the gp surgery.
I joined a few fb b12 groups and many on there tell me that my levels are low and I should start self injecting.
To those who self inject - I don’t like the thought of injecting something I’ve purchased off the internet, how can I guarantee it’s safe?

@Myibsandme I don't know what the levels are till I speak to the GP which isn't for another couple of weeks. I wish they would email you the results but I guess that would be a step too far into the future 😁

Demand your blood test results are either emailed or posted to you. They can’t withhold them from you. I get all of mine for my AI conditions and keep them in a folder so I know what, where and when. I can’t then be fobbed off.

I think it's unacceptable that you didn't get a copy of your results yourself. Ask for them next time.

Cross posted taco.

I have had B12 deficiency since 2006, I was aged 37. I was on 12 weekly injections and doing fine but my GP stopped them in Covid and would not re-start them, just told me to take tablets. (I have taken tablets before and I cannot absorb them) The original GP in 2006 (who has since retired) told me that I would be on them for the rest of my life. I spent 9 months with no injections and was getting really bad, black spots in vision, dizzy, sooo tired (I can relate to the not being able to get up in the morning) and I could not even hold a conversation, I keep forgetting the words for things. I started ordering B12 from Germany and researched on Youtube on what needles to buy and how to self-inject and now I just do it myself. I am doing about every 9-10 weeks at the moment, as I think the period of 9 months without has affected me and it is taking a while to get back on an even keel. In fact, I am 8 weeks today and can feel I am starting to get tired and dizzy so am due soon

I think the way that GPs have behaved during and since Covid is appalling. I have another issue that have not even been able to see a GP about, just left in pain for a year.

GetOurraMeWay that’s beyond frustrating can ring them up and ask them to give you the results over the phone, my surgery will do that? Also, for the future sign up to something like Patient Access or the NHS app, you will need a linkage via the GP surgery but it so handy having your records online. I get my test results online within days.

You are all right, I just didn't think at the time. The receptionist actually said folate serum so I was like what is that?! I'll give them a call on Monday and ask for the details. For all I know it could be just very slightly on the low side and my symptoms could be better dealt with via HRT. I've already had the antidepressants convo - I already take them so no it's not that!!
I'm just bloody knackered all the time and so...flat. No motivation for anything. And my hair and nails are shite. I've been taking Biotin which worked a treat before but is having no effect now. I don't know if I'm grumpy because I'm tired, or hormonal, or because everything and everyone is just so bloody annoying!!!
I'm also fat as I'm eating too much crap to keep myself going. Bleugh.

I have the same symptoms but it didn't show up in blood tests from 6 months ago. If you aren't deficit can taking some boost energy or something?

SayrraT · 26/06/2023 20:55

Folate isn't B12, it's B9 so have you been prescribed folic acid?

You could also try and make sure you are eating a good diet with green veg (kake, spinach, peas, Brussels sprouts). Though if you already do then it's possible you can't absorb it.
