Broken toe, in need of MN experience and wisdom

Definitely broken. Bruising only appeared day after. Agony to walk on heal best. Have an appointment I have to get to next week. Any tips on best way to aid recovery apart from a miracle?

there's almost nothing you can do - are you ok wearing shoes? I've broken several (not big toe, that's a whole other ballgame) and it's a waiting game

gogomoto · 22/06/2023 16:13

May feel a lot better tgen, the bruising hurts most

007DoubleOSeven · 22/06/2023 16:19

You can strap it up with cotton wool and medium and medical tape. Take painkillers, avoid heels.

Raindropsarefallingheavily · 22/06/2023 16:24

A Broken Toe tale to amuse you..
Teen ds broke his at school playing football. I have experience of sitting in a & e awaiting dd being seen after going down a bannister drunk and breaking hers.. 6 hour waiting time.
School rang and I said he could just stay there as there wasn't anything to be done..
Ds came home fuming (off the bus in 1 shoe!) that I was the worst dm in the world for not collecting him! He had smugly told all his mates he would be getting a half day at school and 6 weeks off! I am self employed and wasn't losing a day's work!

IrisGold · 22/06/2023 16:25

Hurts for 2 or 3 weeks then starts to improve (but can end up always a bit prone to hurting).
Tape it to the next toe. Wear socks and big comfy trainers.

whoruntheworldgirls · 22/06/2023 16:26

I've broken my little toes a few times and the toe next to it once, all i did was put a little cotton ball in between then and strap them together, elevate where possible and take painkillers.
Bloody hurts.

Leftrigh · 22/06/2023 17:05

So I don’t have any shoes wide enough and they are all quite high up my feet to push into too. I’m thinking buy online some flat ballerina style shoes maybe best? Wondering how long before I can drive, with painkillers maybe? as next appointment in 3 weeks time is too far to get a taxi or friend to go.

Strap it up for support and buy a pair over wide fitting crocs one size bigger than you normally would buy. That's what I had to do, it was agony as I broke two toes together. It took weeks to heal.

What about one of these for getting around? My friend broke her ankle and thought it was a great invention. Led to many chats from curious folk as she went places. She's in her 30's.

amused us all. Seriously thinking about ordering it if only to see cheery smiles!

Keep it elevated, whenever you are not moving around get the foot up even if its just a box under a desk. Massively helps the swelling, and therefore the pain. Also helps you gut it into shoes. I found going sockless gave me more room in shoes too.

Ibruprofen will help with the swelling

I broke my toe last year and you should get an X-ray to see if it's dislocated or not. Mine turned out to be dislocated so I had to tape it (with one of those paper medical tapes) to the adjacent toe for about 2 weeks (or 3?) as there is no way to put a cast on it.

The dr I saw told me that if it's dislocated and I don't tape it, it might not heal properly and I might have an ongoing pain (the only way to get rid of it would be surgery). So yeah, X-ray seems quite important.

Gracewithoutend · 22/06/2023 19:08

It depends how long ago it happened but if it's recent, keep your foot raised, walk on it as little as possible. Ice it to take down the swelling. I was told not to take ibuprofen as it can stop it healing as fast. Splint it to keep it in position - when you walk, you keep bending it, so healing will take longer.

Second this, i didn't tape one of mine for long enough and it healed slightly twisted and now gets the odd dull ache, I imagine like mild arthritis.
The one i did tape probably has healed perfectly.

SomePeopleAreNice · 23/06/2023 00:14

I broke a toe and found it surprisingly painful. It still hurts sometimes. I've broken other bones but it was my toe that surprised me the most.

SeaToSki · 23/06/2023 00:24

Tape it to its next door neighbor

wear a shoe with a really rigid sole, like a hiking boot or something. You want as solid a base underneath the break as possible

elevate, ice and ibuprofen

pray

and do get an xray if you think there is the slightest chance it isnt straight

Tilllly · 23/06/2023 00:35

Big toe - you need to be seen

Any others, wear trainers or converse. First two weeks are the worst, ibuprofen gel is a lifesaver

I've broken a lot of toes! Bastard things hurt!

CC4712 · 23/06/2023 00:36

Which toe???

If its your big toe- get it checked at a minor injuries/GP
If any other toe- buddy strap to the next toe as others have suggested

Offwegotosleep · 23/06/2023 00:39

I broke my big toe and got given a special shoe/boot thing which stops your toes from making any impact impact with the ground.
If you can’t walk go to A&E and see if the can help.

HundredMilesAnHour · 23/06/2023 00:44

I've broken various toes (never the big toe) many times. I'm an idiot. 😫

Usually I just leave it to heal and just wear flipflops with a chunky sole, but last time I strapped it up as it was sticking out an a weird angle. Ended up buying some chunky shearling sliders from Fitflop. They were great for a broken toe!

They take forever to heal. Feels like forever. I have memories of getting the tube to work in the depths if winter wearing a smart skirt suit with bare legs and flipflops (and freaking out if anyone looked like they might touch my foot).

Leftrigh · 23/06/2023 06:12

Thanks everyone. Definitely middle toe broken. Wide shoes and the fit flops, to see which I can cope with best, ordered. Praying heals super quick! Strapped up. Elevating as much as possible and trying to stay off it unless have to.couldn’t believe the pain from one Little toe.

JustDanceAddict · 23/06/2023 07:06

If it’s a big toe you need to get it x/rayed.
I think I broke my little toe in lockdown 1 - dh strapped it to its neighbour and all was fine (my whole foot was bruised & swollen from stubbing it which doesn’t normally happen).

User195376587 · 23/06/2023 07:56

When I broke the toe next to my little toe, I wore my gardening crocs which were a bit on the big side as my foot had swelled a bit, I had to wear these for quite a while and go to work in them. I elevated my foot as much as possible. They were comfortable though for it

Leftrigh · 23/06/2023 12:05

Thanks all MNetters! How long before being able to drive or walk long distances is my worry as I start counting the days.
