Breast lump biopsied. Surgeon said he suspects cancer

Hi,

I went to my Doctor a few weeks ago about a breast lump and she sent through an urgent referral to the breast clinic. I was examined, had an ultrasound, mammogram and a biopsy (well 2 actually as they found another lump nearby while biopsying the first) and then waited another hour for the surgeons consult. When I went into the room he introduced me to a breast cancer nurse and had my scans on the screen. He said right away he suspects cancer. Should he even be scaring me like this before the biopsy comes back. He didn't tell me any other things it could be so is it likely he can tell? They even explained what the next steps would likely to he and even named a book I could show my 5 year old to explain the breast cancer.

It's been a week waiting for results already and I feel like I've been diagnosed already. Should this have happened? Could it be something else?

Also, I've had pain in my left arm (it was my left breast that has the lump) since February on and off so not only am I thinking it's cancer but I'm convinced it's also spread (although the ultrasound couldn't see anything in my armpits).

I suffer from health anxiety as it is and had to go to therapy last year as it was so bad. Now i feel like someone has there hands around my throat constantly.

On top of that I'm a single mum to an autistic child with no family around for support. I honestly don't know how we'd cope :(

Good luck, wishing you well. But as per pp, please take down the pic as your nhs number is visible; it’s unique to you and will be linked to every single aspect of any interaction with the nhs you’ve ever had. So anyone with access to the system could look you up - it would be illegal of course but I think you can’t be too careful.

Hi, it says the picture has been removed already. I can't see it but can anyone else still see it?

Thanks for the well wishes for tomorrow

Thanks everyone. Hope you are all doing well and I really do appreciate you sharing your stories.

Anyway my appointment is tomorrow. Thats 3.5 weeks after my biopsy. Nothing seemed urgent and when I spoke to them on the phone no one mentioned to bring someone. I also got this letter today and again it doesn't say to bring anyone.

Is this a good sign or bad communication???

Unfortunately you can't really judge anything from what's happened so far. I have a 'scare' going on at the moment (pain and bumpy mass rather than a discernible lump) and have done a lot of reading around. It's NHS guidance to give you results by a 28 day deadline (the clock is started at your first appointment).
I'll be thinking of you and hoping all is well.

@Shelzymac, take your time. It's a lot to absorb.
When you're ready, contact the breast care nurses at your hospital. They'll talk you through anything you might have missed.
Whilst it's grade 3, it's still classed as 'early', so take some hope from that.
All the best. Flowers

I've just found this thread.
I'm sorry it wasn't the news you were hoping for.
I have nothing useful to add but didn't want to ignore your post.

Dragonsandcats · 04/07/2023 22:17

I hope others will be along to give you more useful information but I’m so sorry to hear your news. I hope you have a treatment plan soon, wishing you all the best. Medicine is so good now, and I hope you have lots of support from breast care nurses at the hospital.

This was me, same diagnosis, and I too knew that the consultant knew from our very first meeting. I had chemo, radio, a double mastectomy and reconstruction (i replaced the non affected breast with an implant just to be on the safe side) and kept most of my hair by using the cold cap. I thought genuinely I was going to die. I had 4 young children at the time……
6 years later, I have been discharged from the breast clinic and fit, healthy and alive, working and healthy mental outlook. I remember being totally blindsided and traumatised but there can be a way though. Sending love. Any questions feel free to PM me.

Ineedsleepnotsugar · 04/07/2023 22:40

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this, especially since they didn't ask you to bring someone along with you. Must have been difficult to take in.

Macmillan and Breast Cancer Now provide support. They also have grants that you can apply for- you can use this to help with childcare.

My prayers are with you.

@Shelzymac sorry to hear your news, it's a massive shock bug I promise it's not as bad as you may think and you'll get through it.

Did they tell you if it is hormone receptive?

I had the same as you, my original US showed a 1.8mm lump and the original plan was a lumpectomy and radiotherapy. My CT scan then showed it was bigger so I had 6 months of hormone therapy to shrink the tumour. I was then able to have the lumpectomy rather that a mastectomy and I had 3 weeks of radiotherapy. I breezed through all of that. It can be hard, and chemo is harder but it's not always as awful as you may think.

So sorry OP and glad you're being supported on here x
