After being in agony for over a week I managed to get the dentist to squeeze me in for root canal.
i was told it would be sore for 48 hours after.
As soon as the numbness wore off I could feel the same pain as before. Not soreness where he’s been digging around etc but the same jaw and ear ache and sensitivity to even luke warm tea.
took another course of antibiotics (I’d had some before the root canal aswell) and it’s now a week later …still hurting. In fact all my front teeth feel sensitive, the back one he’s treated is sore to touch,
jaw aches, head aches, feel horrible.
I’ve been on the phone so many times since this all kicked off I feel like I must be being a wimp.

surely something is wrong here though ?

I've nothing useful to add OP. Just giving this a bump.
I must admit I'm surprised that a dentist would do a root canal on a painful and recently infected tooth.
I do hope you get some relief soon 💐

I had to have 2 courses of antibiotics for the infection to clear up before they even started the root canal - which then took 3 separate appointments to finish. Even then it failed.... I'm still waiting to get what's left of the tooth removed. I really hope it feels better soon - there is nothing like toothache!

No advice tooth pain is the worst - hopeful bump for you.

HeckinBamboozled · 20/06/2023 19:36

Sounds like it's still infected. Can you get an emergency appointment with another dentist? Try 111.

If you have any external swelling you may need to go to A&E as it can cause problems with your breathing.

Good luck dental pain is the worst!

It takes a while for a tooth to settle down after having work on it. Even a filling takes a while before the tooth feels better.

However if I were you I would ring the dentist and tell them what's going on. Only they will be able to advise you, and if you're still having trouble you might need a second opinion.

I’d rather be in labour than endure an infected tooth. You definitely need to go back (and see a different dentist?)

ThePersistenceOfMammories · 20/06/2023 19:44

What antibiotics are you taking? I’ve always been given metronidazole for tooth infections. The one time I was given penicillin it came back after a week

AcclimDD · 20/06/2023 19:53

Is it a back molar?

Cati482 · 20/06/2023 20:18

I recently had something similar, had an old root canal redone, no pain after the procedure but about a day and half later started getting some pain in the tooth (which was a Friday). By the Saturday I was in absolute agony, my gums and cheek started to swell and nothing was touching the pain. After enduring what must have been the worst 48 hours of my life, got back to the dentist who prescribed amoxicillin. After about 5 days there was some improvement but I was still in pain so the dentist prescribed metronidazole and that’s what finally cleared it up, so maybe you need a second, stronger course of antibiotics. I really sympathise, there’s nothing worse than tooth pain 💐

PinkButtercups · 20/06/2023 23:01

Did the dentist take an X-ray whilst doing the first part of the root canal?

Elasticatedwaist · 21/06/2023 08:23

At the first appointment he did an X-ray ,5 days amoxycillin and another appointment which wasn’t for another 3 weeks. After a hellish few days I was back on the phone telling them I couldn’t wait that long etc and managed to get in sooner. I thought my pain was over. Seems not.
maybe the amoxicillin just isn’t strong enough then.

If it's a back molar, they can have multiple canals and accessory canals, which can be extremely difficult to access. You might be better off to cut your losses and have it extracted.
