Heart Murmur

PABLOP · 22/02/2008 14:06

Two weeks ago at my DS 8 week checkup, doctor thought son may have a heart murmur when listening to his heart beat, told me not to worry, very common and to bring him back in a month to be checked again. I am very worried although DS does seem to be very healthy. Anybody else experienced this, any advice welcome

my ds was the same and had to go a couple of times to get checked. The murmur was gone by the time he was 6 months old.

My son has a heart murmur, it is innocent.

He is 4 now and still has it. He has been seen by a heart specialist who did a heart scan, trace etc and said to forget all about it, it's just normal for him and he may or may not grow out of it.

Hope this helps.

i have a heart murmur and so does my dad, it isn't serious, all it is, is a sound produced by the heart, usually in between beats, mine actually squeaks

PABLOP · 22/02/2008 16:19

thankyou all, I feel much better now,

As long as your DS is healthy in other ways, the heart murmur is almost certainly innocent. A small proportion of heart murmurs are serious, but he would be showing signs of ill health - pale, floppy, not growing well, etc - if it was caused by a more significant problem, and the doctor would have spotted this and sent him for immediate tests if there was any concern. The vast majority are innocent, and have totally no effect. Some grow out of them, some still have them all their life - but it's just a little extra noise when the doctor listens to their heart.

PABLOP · 22/02/2008 16:32

thanks muminscotland! He is very strong and growing well so hopefully it will be innocent, really glad i asked on here.

My DS has always had a heart murmur too, he is 5 now. It is totally innocent and nothing to worry about, apparantly it is quite common.

As muminscot said, the doctors would know if it was anything serious.

WezzleWoo · 22/02/2008 16:47

Hi Pablop, GP said exactly the same thing about my ds at his 8 week check.

We were told not to worry that if it was serious we would already know about it i.e ds would be poorly not thriving etc.

She referred us to a specialist. We were just there a couple of weeks ago and ds was fine...no sign of a murmur.

Try not to worry, I'm sure he'll be fine.

bettythebuilder · 22/02/2008 17:08

Lucykate, I'm fascinated by your heart squeaking!

I have a heart murmur, my Mum was told when I was young, but forgot to tell me until a doctor mentioned it to me in my teens

I had to have an ECG for a medical for a job in my 20's, (which confirmed it was 'benign',) other than that it's not made any difference.

lucykate · 22/02/2008 17:26

bb, as well as the murmur i also have a condition called supra ventricular tachycardia, all that means is that i have an extra nerve which sometimes causes my heart to race. i think the squeak is partly down to this condition, none of it is serious though, and i don't have any problems with either

bettythebuilder · 22/02/2008 17:56

Have you ever made a 'my heart squeaks for you' valentines card?

Mine just sort of 'flutters' occasionally, but it's not a problem

PABLOP · 04/03/2008 19:26

4 weeks on and had appointment with doctor for check up on potential heart murmur, its still there and the doctor is going to refer him for a scan, Just wanted to say thankyou to those of you who posted on here because you really reassured me when the doctor couldn't.
DS is getting bigger by the day so I am sure there is nothing to worry about.

Just to say, Pablop, I second all that ahs been said re you would know if it was a serious murmur. When my DD was 3 days old the paedatrician found a heart murmur - I had to return to the hospital when she was 3 months for a check. They found the heart murmur had disappeared, but importasntly, the paedatrician who saw us that time (epxperienced - she had students in with her) said that she didnt even really need to check DD - that she could tell as soon as we walked in that DD was fine, because 'babies for whom a heart murmur is serious do not look like that" - 'that' being normal growth, weight, colour, etc. So I think you can pretty much definitely know there is nothing to worry about with your DS. (though it will of course be nice when you are all signed off )

lennygrrl, thanks for advice, I will take DH with me and glad your dd is doing well after your scare. I'm waiting for an appt date so hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

PABLOP - actually I have one, the correct name is a ventrical septal defect- or a VSD. Mine is 13mm wide. I've had it since I was a kid and they used to recommend exercise - the heart's a muscle - so the more exercise the quicker it fixes. Unfortunately for me it never did heal up but I have no problems at all - except during pregnancy when I do get a bit more tired than most but when not pregnant I'm a regular runner so clearly it's not a death sentence!

Try not to worry. Most do heal of their own accord and even if they don't not many people are ever aware they have them, it's incredibly common.

I don't want to scare you, and before you read remember that the majority of heart mumours are just that, heart mumours that people either carry with them for life or that they can disapper in time, but
I agree with Lennygrrl, please don't go on your own as we went through simular with ds, and he was found to have Trialogy of Fallot (hole in his heart and narrow pulmory attery) I went to the scan on my own as dh was away in India on business

PABLOP · 03/04/2008 19:09

Took DS to hospital yesterday and it was good news, no sign of a murmur, he will have another checkup in 4 months but doctor was sure nothing was amiss.
