Urgent advice required - DS has bad cough

CelluliteClaus · 11/12/2004 21:03

I have been on antibiotics for past week for sore throat and ear infection. Today, DS has been coughing a little and went to bed at 8pm as usual. He has not yet fallen to sleep properly and has been coughing on and off. Is there anything we can get him from the chemist at this time of night or anything else we can give him? Any other advice gratefully received. TIA, CQ

Thanks misdee, no he isn't snotty, just coughing and out of sorts. Anything else we can try?

how old is he?

medised may work, cos he may have cattarh running down the back of his throat, and it contains paracetamol as well. the anti histiome stuff in it will help dry the catarrh up.

He's 16 months.

Prop up the bed or put a blanket or something under the mattress to raise his head a bit.
I got some olbas oil on a cotton pad and put on the radiator to get the smell wafting around the room.
Plenty of water too is useful.
Calpol may help a bit.
Hope he settles and rests for you.

misdee · 11/12/2004 21:18

olbus now do a kids version (i always used the adult one tho) karvol is good, calpol do a vapour rub, and there is one called snufflebabe as well. all should be on a supermarket shelf.

hope he feeels better soon.

Do you have a 24 hr Tesco near you? They'd have plenty of stuff there.

misdee · 11/12/2004 21:20

and the pharmacy may be open till 10pm as well.

mullgedwine · 11/12/2004 21:22

I put a wet towel over the radiator to get some humidity into the room. I find central heating drys up the air and makes coughing worse. other than that, Medised is fab for colds as it has a small amount of knock out drops ( anti histamine) in it. Prop the cot/bed up on books or put lo under a strong pillow/cushion to help breathing. Good luck

we went to the hospital with our ds1 (18months)last night as his breathing was very fast and shallow together with loads of coughing. aswell as the antibiotics we were advised to humidify the room - either by boiling a kettle in the room for a while or putting hot wet towel on radiator or big bowl/bucket of hot steaming water under the head of his bed and elevate mattress if poss. maybe putting a pillow under his mattress could help and when he' s taking fluids mix with warm boiled water.
you have my sympathy - its so horrible seeing them so ill. hopefully they will be clear for xmas xx

CelluliteClaus · 11/12/2004 21:32

Thanks for all your replies. Unfortunately, we can't do the towel thingy as we have storage heaters. Our nearest 24 hour Tesco is 30 miles away but we have "Calpolised" him and so far so good. Fingers crossed xxx

just suddenly thought about bowl/bucket under bed with boiling water advice -for extra safety make sure there is no way they can wriggle their hands down to reach it

fruitcake · 11/12/2004 22:10

My 2 have both had bad bouts with coughing over the years. I think you should only really worry if darling child is having trouble breathing, ie wheezing, ribcage contracting when inhaling, blue lips and fingertips, that sort of thing. If you're instinct tells you to get help, do so.
