more than recommended dose of antihistamines?

I am very allergic to grass pollen - this last week has been just horrendous. The only way I am managing my symptoms (mostly itchy and swollen eyes) is by using a fexofenadine first thing when I get up, and then taking a piriton during the day when I feel I need to. And using eye drops.

I feel OK, not overly drowsy. Sure I read somewhere that exceeding the recommended dose of antihistamines wasn't so awful.

Use Beconase spray as well ?

IShouldBeSleeping · 14/06/2023 08:39

They’re different medications, you should be fine. I also top up my regular antihistamine with piriton this time of year

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/06/2023 08:48

Maybe the liquid Piriton would be better as you can take that multiple times throughout the day. Revised to take that when his was really bad, seemed to work better than the one a day tablet.

INeedAnotherName · 14/06/2023 08:59

I would have thought taking one dose at night and then another in the morning, topped up by nasal spray or eye wash as needed would be the best approach. Or have you tried that?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/06/2023 09:04

When my hay fever is at its worst adding Pirinaze is the thing that helps - I only use it for that week or 10 days when even my ears and the inside of my skull is itching. The rest of the time I use cetirizine and sodium cromoglycate eye drops, and I haven't found that doubling up on tablets really helps (an allergist told me it was ok to take cetirizine at night and then in the morning).

GulesMeansRed · 14/06/2023 09:09

My nose / sneezing isn’t bothering me as much. It’s the itchy eyes.

I occasionally break out in hives very badly. A pharmacist gave me 2 different types of antihistamine and told me to take both but to space them out.

If you can pop in to speak to a pharmacist it might put your mind at rest, but I now don't hesitate to take both when I need it.

Wanttobemorechilliheeler · 14/06/2023 09:17

I honestly have to take so many I've given up worrying about it. I tend to take fexofenadine tablet at night, first thing in the morning, a liquid cetrizine in the morning and then usually at least one more fexofenadine during the day before the next night time one. Supposed to be one a day but this just about keeps it at bay but it's still miserable. Debated having a hayfever injection that a local private clinic offers but it's been removed from NHS due to potential side effects so I'm undecided.
I am not, clearly, a medical professional in any shape of form so don't take this as advice but is just my own personal experience.

bonfirebash · 14/06/2023 09:28

I've taken 4 cetirizine a day for 26 years
Still here

InAFettle · 14/06/2023 09:35

In younger, stupider days a friend took an entire pack of antihistamines in one go at a festival as he was going mad. Don’t think it did anything for his hayfever but it didn’t do anything bad. I always double / triple drop tbh but antihistamines don’t seem to do anything for me.

Sodium Cromoglicate eye drops really are the only things they help my eyes. I use opticrom brand. I just have to put up with the incredibly painful sinuses because sprays just burn / don’t actually work.

I’d love to be a person that responded to the sprays and pills like others seem to.

I took ds 12 to the gp a few days ago as he had restricted breathing from his hayfever. The gp said it was fine for him to have 3/4 lotatidine or cetrazine per day, but only one fexfanadie (sp(
Also he said to take beconase

MsPussinBoots · 14/06/2023 09:40

I'm another one who takes 2/3 fexofenadine daily (as advised by gp) plus various allergy eye drops. Nothing is helping this week!

Azaeleasinbloom · 14/06/2023 09:43

I take cetirizine (1 per day) , Flixonase nasal spray (twice daily) , and at this time of year Piriton up to 4 times a day as per pharmacist. Piritize is the same as Cetirizine so no benefit) as to be the OTC Piriton.
I also use eye drops as needed .

cathyandclare · 14/06/2023 09:46

I was prescribed Fexofenadine three times a day and/or piriton at night for urticaria and angioedema, so it can be taken at a higher dose when necessary.

Beconase spray helps that as well in my experience too, it's all connected.

That's what mine was for. Did nothing sadly but Xolair was the game changer

MathiasBroucek · 14/06/2023 10:00

I once accidentally took two doses (four hour) of Piriton. I felt quite queer for a couple of hours and was then OK. Not recommended!

Cornflakesaredabomb · 14/06/2023 10:00

Yes you can easily take twice a day but I’d also add in eye drops and a steroid nasal spray. Optilast are the best eye drops.

also Google nasal douching.

sunglasses and change clothes/wash hair when coming home from outside. Keep windows shut etc.

NancyAndLee · 14/06/2023 10:19

My GP said it was OK for my 9 year old to exceed the recommended dose if necessary so I'm sure it's OK for an adult, but you could check with your own GP if you're worried.

GulesMeansRed · 14/06/2023 12:55

Fexo plus the odd piriton keeping my symptoms at bay. It’s not prolonged use. Crossing my fingers did rain.

You ought to speak to your pharmacist about this but excessive antihistamine can cause tachycardia.
