Hyperthyroidism - Overactive thyroid

Hello! I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism around February time and I'm currently taking propylthiouracil 25mg twice a day to treat it. I'm still feeling really rubbish and have a lot of symptoms which have been feeling since January. I've been referred but I haven't got an appointment until September and the doctor isn't sure what is causing them/ whether they're thyroid related or something else. It's really starting to get me down now and I have three small children to look after so I want to feel better.

Some of my symptoms are:
Daily headache/ pains in head
Neck ache/ ache at base of skull
Enlarged thyroid gland
Huge weight loss
Fatigue
Irritability
Anxiety and possible depression
Burning feeling in eyes and head/ eye pain (vision was checked and fine)
Blocked ears sensation
Bruising easily (lots on legs and arms)
Pins and needles in arms and legs occasionally
Feeling hot

He has referred me for an urgent brain MRI but I haven't heard anything yet and that was three weeks ago. He doesn't think anything sinister but wants to rule it out.
I've attached my most recent bloods which was taken in April. I was wondering if there were any GPs or anyone who's had any experience to give advice on anything I can do or take to help me feel better please. Are there any other blood tests I should be asking for? I'm also breastfeeding my 9 month old. I've recently increased my vitamin d levels too. Iron and b12 have come back fine. I've just bought some magnesium to try too? Trying daily walks too ease anxiety as it seems to be getting worse due to how I've been feeling. Thank you in advance 😊

Get yourself another GP. You are not hyperthyroid. You can't be hyperthyroid unless your FT4 and FT3 are above the reference range.Your FT4 is mid range and your FT3 doesn't seem to have been tested.

Ask for repeat thyroid function test including FT3 and TPO and Tg antibodies for starters and also get yourself over to the ThyroidUK forum on www.healthunlocked.com for some proper advice. They will support you.

Thank you so much for your reply! Could this be why I'm feeling so rubbish if I'm still taking propylthiouracil and do not necessarily need it?

Sounds like you have sub clinical hyperthyroidism. May be being caused by a goiter or by Graves’ disease or just some inflammation of the thyroid. Sub clinical is when TSH levels are low but thyroid levels normal. This will be why doc needs a scan to see if you have any nodules on your thyroid.

TheOtherHotstepper · 14/06/2023 12:44

But TSH is not low enough for subclinical hyperthyroidism?

Get thee to Health Unlocked OP. They know their stuff and will help you.

Yes it is, it’s 0.08 which is severe subclinical

These are her most recent labs and are based on her being treated so yes, she can well have hyperthyrodism that with treatment has now stabilized slightly.

Likely if she went off her meds she would go back to being overtly hyperthyroid. Having more normal labs whenmedicated it is not a sign that there isn't a problem that needs treating.

OP, often thyroid dysfunction is caused by an uderlying problem. With hyperthyroidism, the most common is an autoimmune condition called Graves Disease and the symptoms of the autoimmune disease can be present even when you are euthyroid.

However if you are still losing weight and experiecing key signs of hyperthyroidism -being hot and sweaty,, anxiety, agitation, fast heart rate, weight loss, etc then that likely still means your thyroid hasn't really yet stabilized.

It is good he is sending you for an MRI to rule out other causes.

I have/had all of those symptoms and I have Graves’ disease.

There is an excellent Facebook page to join and your GP should be referring you to Endriconology. You also need a blood test to test for Graves. That’s just my thoughts though.
