Hello there

just been diagnosed with underactive thyroid and on 50mg of thyroxine for last four weeks. Made some progress (after I stopped taking my iron tablets at the same time - thanks for the tip mumsnet). But I am a little worried that over last few days feeling anxious and depressed again. Trying to get out of it but struggling. Not sure if it's just me, or I;m not on high enough dose or there is a continuing under and over activity going on. Anyone know of these symptoms?

Tinape

it is calles Graves disease where your thyroid can be normal one minute then swings from either over active or underactive. there are signs to this like protruding eyes.

Feeling anxious and depressed is one of the possible symptoms of a underactive thyroid.

Do you know what your TSH is.

I also have a underactive thyroid and I am on 75mg of thyroxine my TSH was 6.6 on the last check.

It could be that your TSH is not within normal range yet.

Can I just ask what other sysmptoms have you had.

Hello Worzil

thanks for feedback. I am depressed, anxious and am losing weight. I am a little lethargic but not that much. for last six months have had late and heavy periods (although recent period saw a remarkable improvement and not really heavy at all). I am having more regular bowel movements than usual, aches in my legs and forgetfulness. i am also anaemic (doc says it's from my heavy periods). BEfore I was diagnosed I had a massive anxiety attack and was wired so badly I thought I was going to die. My suspicion is that my thyroid went overactive before it finally conked out. However, I am not sure if my present depression and anxiety is linked with thyroid flipping from over to under active, or whether it's simply caused by the underactive thyroid and will get better in time.

Tinape I have heard anecdotally that the thyroid can go overactive before it conks out completely so I think you could be right there....I'm not medically qualified but have underactive thyroid and know that depression and anxiety are big signs of underactive thyroid so that could be the case for you. You may need to get re-tested and keep on at the doctor to get your dose right. Are you sure your TSH level was 167 ??????????????? I think 10 would be high, so have you read that right?!?!

I think in view of the fact you are losing weight, it might be worth asking your dr to look into Graves disease for you; it's more common to gain and retain weight with underactive thyroid...

I believe the latest research is now stating that TSH level should be as near to 0 as possible; so even you worzil might benefit from an increase in thyroxine to suppress that TSH level down from 6. I think the NHS 'threshold' is five and under so really I think your Dr should be looking again at your dose. How are you feeling on what you're on?

Good luck Tinape, hope you get the right dose etc.

My god Tinape with a TSH like that you must be feeling awful.
Can't say for sure but there is a good chance your problems are down to the thyroid.

Most of the symptoms you describe are down as possible side effects of a underactive thyroid and with a TSH like you mention I would probably put them down to that.

Not sure about the losing weight as usually a underactive thyroid would cause you to put it on.

My AF stopped for 3 months due to my thyroid problem it came back once I had been on thyroxine for a number of weeks.

Do you ever get like palpitations as if your heart is beating fast, and you can feel it throughout your body, even when at rest. I get this sometimes and I am not sure if its down to the thyroid.

HonoriaGlossop

I feel unwell at times but I am not sure if its my thyroid.

I seem to get tired easily, I also keep getting headches, and feeling woozy at times.

I also keep getting waves of nausea.

I don,t kno whether its me or what.

What sort of symptoms did you get and what is your TSH now.
