Has anyone else experienced very heavy periods after childbirth?

Dd is 6 months and BF - much to my annoyance my period started for the first time yesterday (had hoped for a longer break :o) It got heavier and heavier during the day - Without wanting to gross everybody out i had to visit the bathroom last night at 10pm 12midnight 2am 4am 5am 6am 7am 7:45am 8:30am

It got heavier and heavier - no pain though - not sure now whether its slowing up or not

Its much heavier than what i would call a normal period. My periods after ds was born were always really light - so light in fact i thought i was experiencing an early menopause - then found out i was pregnant with dd :o

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes- my thread on the same subject was entitled "bloodbath!". My dd is now 3 and my periods remain a lot heavier than they ever were before she was conceived, though not as bad as that first one.

Mine were particularly bad after my 2nd baby. Came back at 3 months despite breatfeeding, which I felt very unfair! I couldn't really leave the house on the 2nd day of each period. However they did settle down a bit over time, but still much heavier than pre children.

PrettyHannukahndles · 11/12/2004 11:16

My periods were much heavier after ds, but much lighter (than pre-babies) after dd. I put that downt ot he fact that I had a fibroid that grew humungously during my first pg, whereas I believe it died during my second pg.

And mine also started around 6-7m, despite bfing Wink.

cazzybabs · 11/12/2004 11:30

oh yes - mine were heavier. What will it be like after 2 children?

OLittleYurtofBethlehem · 11/12/2004 11:49

Thanks for your replies - I was really encouraged by your bloodbath thread tissy - am really glad its not just me - but also really hoping i dont have any more like this - I really dont want to be housebound for 24+ hours every month - thankfully dh was here to get more supplies for me - hopefully if there is another time it wont happen all night long - Dh has just told me i looked worst at 8am when my face and lips were white!!!!!!!!

If it's so heavy that you go white, perhaps you should see your GP. There are drugs that can make the period lighter. You ought as well to take an iron supplement, as you need your energy with two little ones!

OLittleYurtofBethlehem · 11/12/2004 11:57

In 1996 i spent 5 days in hospital cos of a similar problem - I had glandular fever and a related blood condition which meant - bloodbath period and bruises all over arms and legs, nose bleeds and loads of black blisters in my mouth. Ended up having three blood transfusions - so i think i can be forgiven for panicking(sp?)????????????

Good heavens, you certainly can! You're a heck of a lot calmer than me - I owuld have been battering the GP's door down by now!

I'm having the same thing.

After each Ds my periods have got heavier but I'm now in a catch 22 as before kids they were long, light and very painful for 3-4 days but now they are short-ish, painful for only a day but so heavy it's ridiculous.

Not sure if I'm worse off so don't know whether I should speak to the GP.

Horrid though isn't it?

advocaatofthedevil · 12/12/2004 09:13

Bloodbaths here too :(

pixiefish · 12/12/2004 09:16

yep. have settled a bit now, 6 months after restarting but still heavier and more painful. first 6 months of them were horrendous

busybusychristmashatter · 12/12/2004 10:00

no bloodbaths but definitely a lot heavier than before - I've decided to give the Mirena coil a try - sounds tip top to me - no hassle contraception and virtually non-existent periods - in fact I've heard of doctors recommending it specifically for heavy periods - there are lots of thread about it on here. In fact I wouldn't have heard of it if not for mn

Petall · 12/12/2004 13:47

Heavier after DS2, apparently the more children you have your uterus is stretched more so it is common. I was put on transexamic acid and now have a mirena coil to help. Go to your GP first as you should have a blood test to check your iron levels and thyroid function too.
It's horrible and scary I know, as for the thought of having to leave the house! Good luck though and hope it settles down soon.

DingWongMerrilyOnHigh · 12/12/2004 13:53

Yes I did
and after iron levels and thyroid function check, as you say, they are much better, I'll be in those cream slacks before long Wink

Gobbledigoose · 12/12/2004 14:56

Not read other posts but I'm glad to see this thread as I was quite alarmed when mine returned a few weeks ago after having ds3 in August. I've never had one like it - like you, I was up in the night and every time I went to the loo it was like a blood bath - sorry if TMI!

I just couldn't believe it and it was like that for a few days - I had to go and buy the most super, super, super tampons and normally I just use 'normal flow' ones!!

Didn't have this after ds1 or ds2 so hope the next one (due on Xmas day - hurrah!) is not so bad!

OLittleYurtofBethlehem · 12/12/2004 20:59

OH you would not believe how glad i am that i am not the only one - it has been soooooooooooo horrid - i was wondering whether it got worse after each child - certainly puts me off having any more!!!!! I was told about the uterine contractions being worse after each subsequent child but nobody let me know about this!!!!!!!!!!

THe weird thing is that after ds was born periods were irregular and almost nonexistent so the last couple of days has been a complete shock - and now of course after 2/3 days of niagra falls now there is nothing!!!!!!!!!!!

Am definitely going to investigate the mirena coil

Also - tampons keep falling out! - Is it cos i have been naughty and never bothered with pelvic floor exercises?????

Hee hee! Dunno but I def have to use bigger ones than I used to! How embarrassing!!

(Dh assures me he's noticed no difference Shock Grin)
