Private healthcare and pre existing conditions

For the last four years I have spent a fortune on physiotherapy due to mainly an ankle problem but recently a back problem. A few weeks ago an osteopath has told me he thinks I have Ehler Danlos Syndrome and I have a GP appt next week to discuss this.

if I do have this my health is likely to deteriorate with further joint problems, etc and with the state of the nhs this scares me. at the minute there is nothing on my health records regarding EDS. If I was to cancel the GP appt next week and take out private health insurance I know it wouldn’t cover my ankle issue and probably not my back as I was in hospital with it a few weeks ago. But it would probably cover me for anything I develop in the future.

if I did this how long am I likely to have to wait to go see the gp to talk to them about the possibility of EDS so it can be a new condition?

Does anyone know anything about Beneden insurance? They say they cover pre existing conditions which seems too good to be true.

Oh it looks like nobody, not even Bupa covers chronic conditions so will knock this idea on the head. 😁

Bupa definitely don’t (DH works for them) cover more than a limited period of time after diagnosis with a chronic condition. I’ll check with him but I think it’s 3 months

The pre existing conditions go on symptom start date, not diagnosis so you're right, it wouldn't be covered, plus, as you mentioned, chronic condition exclusion.

Some work policies cover for pre existing. Mine does.

Leo227 · 08/06/2023 19:06

my Bupa work cover does cover existing conditions.
not sure if that's because it's via work so they pay more if the pp above reckons they don't usually.

DH says they do offer ‘medical history disregarded’ plans but, if bought by an individual, they’re very expensive.

Thanks. Will take my chances with the nhs!
