Nasal rinse for sinus problems

Hibbutyhop · 05/06/2023 20:46

I have suffered with sinus problems for absolutely years and have finally brought a nasal rinse from Amazon. I haven’t dared to use it yet because the instructions aren’t very clear! Is the water (with saline solution) meant to be a certain temperature? Do I just use tap
water or cooled boiled water? Any tips for using it?

Dp just got one and is using pre boiled saline water but not sure what you're meant to do

I have suffered with chronic sinusitis for more than 30 years since I broke my nose. As a last ditch effort, the ENT advised me to cut out dairy and I've gone from having 1 bout of sinusitis every 6 weeks to having 1 this year so far.

It may not work for you but didn't want to leave it without mentioning it!

I use Flixanase, a steroidal spray, otc or on prescription.
To say it transformed my life would be an understatement.

I struggled with the Neti pot. I just use copious amounts of sterimar saline spray. It’s made a huge difference to my sinus issues. I use it twice daily.

I use one and use tap water but warm as it's nicer than cold water up my nose

I suffer terribly with sinus infections that go to my chest then turn into pneumonia. I have recurrent MRSA and not even sinus surgery fixed it. I use normal warm tap water with a big pinch of salt and bicarbonate of soda. Exactly the same as the little sachets of rinse. I also buy pre-made sauce spray bottles for in the bathroom and on my bedside table as I often need to blow my nose at night/ on the loo etc. neilmed variable stay with 3 heads is the biggest bottle I've found but it can get pricey. I only ever use the finest mist on that but often you can get smaller pump acting bottles in places like b and m or home bargains for £1-3 . They work just as well.

Just a heads up

Can you sinus rinse with tap water UK?

First, rinse only with distilled, sterile or previously boiled water. Tap water isn't safe for use as a nasal rinse because it's not adequately filtered or treated

I use cooled boiled water - slightly warmer than room temperature.

The first time is a bit weird amd scary. You squeeze the water into one nostril and it comes out the other... such an odd sensation at first. But you v quickly get used to it.

My sinuses are currently a lot better, but after months of up and down and 2 terrible infections that required antibiotics I did a few months of beconase and regular saline solutions and it did make a huge difference. It was like I needed to properly clear them and disinfect them as otherwise it was just constantly reoccurring.

Boil water before bed and leave it overnight. Heat some up the next day in microwave (warm, not hot) and add the sachet and shake. Put the bottle up one nostril and squeeze, the water/gunk will come streaming out of the other nostril. Repeat for other side with second half of bottle.

I use boiled water and pour it into a measuring jug throughout the evening as I make drinks. Then transfer to the squeezy bottle and rinse about an hour before bed. I use a steroid spray about 30 minutes later.

What is the name of the device you want to use? Neti pot or something else? I agree that you should never use just tap water! Boil first, let cool to a body temp, add the saline salts and use. I found body temp more comfortable than really cold.

Before you start, keep breathing through your mouth slowly. When I first used a neti pot type device, I could feel the water filling my nostril and felt slightly panicked- but keep breathing through you mouth- tip your head to the other side and the water flows out the other nostril. Don't tip your head back- otherwise you will taste the salty water at the back of your throat. If you do- just tip it forward again.

I had the most dreadful sinusitis/congestion last year and using the neti pot thing was so refreshing. I could breath for the first time in months and the relief was amazing. Persevere with it.

Try spirulina tablets for sinus issues ( worked great for me - Google them!)

Blogdog · 06/06/2023 07:23

@MeeThree I was also advised to cut out dairy by a consultant after having six antibiotics in a year for sinus issues. That was in 1994 and I’ve never looked back. I didn’t eat any dairy whatsoever for around 5 years. Now I have small amounts but I can feel the congestion if I overdo it. Chocolate, ice cream and cheese are particularly bad; milk itself doesn’t seem to affect it.

MeeThree · 06/06/2023 21:19

So glad it fixed yours @Blogdog

I can't believe I went from almost constant pain, steroids and antibiotics to now a much rarer occurrence. Weirdly I am ok with cheese (I'm not a big chocolate fan anyway) but the big issue for me was milk in my coffee. Now I've swapped to oat milk, it's completely transformed my health
