Supplements worth taking in 50s

timefornewme2023 · 05/06/2023 12:00

Just wondering if I can shortcut a load of research and see what other people in my age group take regularly and think is worthwhile.
I am currently recovering from surgery and can't do any physical exercise so thought adopting some other healthy habits while I am recovering might serve me well for when I get back to work!
So far I have-
Turmeric and black pepper
Inulin

I have some well Woman tablets but stopped taking them so maybe should start by resuming those !
I did take Vit D too but stopped - do we need that in summer ?

Anything else ?

Thanks for any ideas

I'd probably ditch the turmeric and black pepper etc - sounds a bit.. faddy?

I go for high quality with proven results and not too many.

Nordic naturals ultimate omega 3 with D3

Magnesium glycinate

And that's it. Work well
For me. Not particularly cheap but do the job

FelicityFeatherstone · 05/06/2023 13:26

I'd also consider upping your protein a bit and eating some
Fresh pineapple! Helps with surgical recovery

BlondeFool · 05/06/2023 13:31

I take vitamin b12, magnesium and a collagen power.

Will watch answers with interest.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 05/06/2023 13:37

68 and Vit D, magnesium, vit D and zinc.

MeeThree · 05/06/2023 20:45

I am 50 and have been taking omega 3, vitB12 spray and folic acid tablets. I take vitD with K in the winter.

I am feeling better than ever and luckily enough haven't needed HRT yet and I do think these supplements are helping. I did have a specific anaemia caused by low folate/vitB12 which is probably why they are making me feel so much better.

I started by taking Menopace and related menopause supplements but have switched back to Omega 3/vitB12/folic acid as those appear to work better than anything else.

I'm 53.

I take a good multi-vitamin (Life Extension Two Per Day), high strength fish oil (Trained by JP), Vit D3 & K2 (all year), lots of co-enzyme Q10, magnesium (twice a day), iron & vit C (I have/had low ferritin) and zinc.
(All recommended by various medical professionals - and confirmed suitability for me following extensive blood tests).

I take Symprove every morning and collagen (So Collagen). Symprove has really made a difference to me. The jury's still out on the collagen but looks less promising.

In addition to that, I'm taking (mid-short term) curcumin (stronger form of turmeric) with black pepper and rosehip to try to reduce inflammation in my knee due to injury.

I also take acetyl-l-carnitine and apple cider vinegar to support my weight training / gym work.

MotherOfCatBoy · 05/06/2023 21:11

51 here.
Multivitamin (well woman usually) to make sure getting a bit of everything.
Also turmeric, and flax seed oil capsules (vegetarian omega 3).
I run and have knee trouble and I find if I stop taking the turmeric and flax seed, my joints are definitely creakier.
Not on HRT (was for a while and stopped).

Tilllly · 06/06/2023 05:50

I take boots 50+ multivitamin and flaxseed

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 06/06/2023 05:59

Vit D3 + K (the spray one)

I don't take a multi, but I've been taking Solgar Immune supplement since 2020.

Fish oil for joints.

Solgar Gentle Iron.

I also take digestive enzymes every meal as have dodgy gallbladder. Again Solgar.

Re: turmeric- my GP recommended it for joints and I do have some, but haven't taken it regularly as it's also recommended for digestion and it's in the digestive enzymes I take.

MayhemMostly · 06/06/2023 06:05

Don't take inulin on a day you a working in an office or on a long car ride with others. We laugh about it now, but my colleague nearly gassed us all. Was horrific.

Avoid turmeric and black pepper while you are on blood thinners. Can cause issues.

Personally I take a multi vit from boots and from autumn to spring take echinacea too.

Words · 06/06/2023 06:08

I am mid 50s and take vit D, B complex and Magnesium OK - a combined tablet from Boots with other trace elements and vits. Good for hormonal regulation.

Second upping protein intake.

All the best for your recovery!

Frenchfancy · 06/06/2023 06:11

I take turmeric, fish oil, vitamin D (I have low levels so Dr has told me to take it year round) , magnesium and a Glucosamine MSM supplement (for arthritis)

WestHamAreMassive · 06/06/2023 10:26

I take co enzyme q10, sea buckthorn oil for dryness - I don't have dry anything anymore 😉- and krill oil for I don't know what. 52

timefornewme2023 · 06/06/2023 10:35

Thanks all this is very interesting and helpful I am going to read up and then think I will try a new regime for six months .

Have been interested in collagen and magnesium as these seem popular with the menopausal!

I wasn't enquiring from a menopause perspective but based on replies it's probably relevant to say my op was a full hysterectomy and I am on oestrogen only HRT long term now.

I was feeling pretty well pre op so hope anything I take is just preventative/ enhanced wellbeing .

I have protein covered( long term semi low carber!) but will look at adding some Pineapple that's interesting.

Also to the PP who said watch out with the inulin- not had any issues so far but will watch out !

I take magnesium because I'm on BP medication and it helps blood vessels relax. (As a muscle relaxant it's also pretty good for... ahem... toilet habits). It helps with gtting better sleep, as well.

Helenahandkart · 06/06/2023 10:39

I got on well with inulin initially, and it really helped my sleep, but then I had to stop it because it caused horrific piles. They settled down within a couple of days of stopping it. Tried it again and got a reoccurrence. I think it can cause gastro symptoms in some people.

Onlyagirl · 06/06/2023 10:52

What dose of magnesium does everyone take? A lot of the supplements I've looked at are 500mg but the RDA is 385mg. Anyone experienced side effects?

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 06/06/2023 15:07

Magnesium can give you the runs if you take too much. I changed to a supposedly better grade one (can't remember the name) and within days felt awful. I went back to the bogstandard one and never had the problem again.

@WestHamAreMassive I tried sea buckthorn for the reason I think you are suggesting but didn't notice any difference. Which one did you try?

MissyB1 · 06/06/2023 15:19

I’m 55 with a history of breast cancer so can’t take HRT.
I take a magnesium complex (3 different types of magnesium) with added Zinc and Vit D3.
Osteocare which is calcium magnesium zinc and d3. I’m getting a lot of that 😂

Im thinking of starting collagen, but don’t know which to choose.
