Gastroscopy via nose?

Dear all, I have received an appointment letter for gastroscopy upper GI endoscopy later on this month. The letter states that they will offer me the Transnasal endoscopy method, via nose instead of mouth, as they say that this is better tolerated, sedation not needed, thinner scope, less gagging etc. It also allows the patient to talk and sit in a semi upright position.

It certainly sounds better than the conventional oral route. Has anyone had this gastroscopy procedure via the nose and how did you find it? I was also informed that the procedure will be performed by a nurse, which I thought was unusual, as I expected I doctor would do it. Again, I would be grateful for any insight into this.

If there is anyone on here that works in the field of endoscopy, I would love to hear from you and also from anyone who has had these procedures. I have read up on the risks of endoscopy like perforation of the oesophagus or stomach and this terrifies me. Any help/tips would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I've had a gastroscopy, mine was done via throat although I have heard you can have it done by nose. It sounds more pleasant! I had to be sedated for mine, it sounds nice to be able to sit and talk during the procedure.

However what I came here to say is it's completely normal to have it done by a nurse. They are specialist trained endoscopy nurses, so they know what they're doing, don't worry!

I'd still insist on light sedation personally

Thank you both for your replies and especially for the insight into the specialist nurses Daisythecat15. If anyone else out there has had the Transnasal gastroscopy procedure, it would be so useful to hear from you.

I had the nose one - I was offered it as this is my phobia! It was done by a doctor, I had all the numbing sprays and sedation. It wasn't too bad at all and would definitely recommend it.

I had one a couple of years ago but only down as far as my throat. It felt a bit odd but complete fine, very quick.

I've had an endoscopy in the past and it was far easier than that.

I had a similar procedure to look at my larynx. It was done via the nose as I could have it done without a general anaesthetic. One nostril was fine, a bit odd but ok. Turns out the other has a twisted septum and that was very uncomfortable. Made worse by the fact that I was told to stop snotting and that I needed to not have watering eyes. These are not things you can control in this situation!

Thank you so much for your replies. I have never had any procedures via the nose, so I hope it will be a straightforward examination. It will be a full gastroscopy looking at the oesophagus, stomach and up to the small intestine. I find it all very nerve wracking.

How did this go Min75, realise it was a while ago, but hopefully it was an easy procedure?
