Costochonditris experiences please!

Looking for some advice from people who may have experienced this..

End of April went to Dr with a chest infection and was given antibiotics, first May bank holiday I coughed violently and felt a ping in my chest. Immensely painful! l saw Dr again and was given pain relief and advised it sounded like I'd torn a muscle. Sent to x-ray to rule out broken ribs and Dr said at that point it's likely I've Costochonditris along side the torn muscle.

A month on I'm still needing the naproxen twice daily and have a crushing heavy pain in the entirety of my chest and putting any pressure on my back, such as sitting in the car or leaning on a hard back chair is so painful.

Anyone else experienced this? How ever long is this going to go on for?!

Thank you

Yes I've had a similar experience, it was awful. For me it took a few months to get better but it came back (a bit milder each time) for years afterwards.

Sorry that's not what you want to hear and hopefully it won't be the same for you but I remember how intense it was. I've heard that an osteopath might be able to help, I didn't go as I was young and poor but I would do if I got it again now.

Hi,

I had this and it’s horrible painful. Mine lasted about 6 weeks. Managed with ibuprofen which always wore off before I could take more. Never had it before or since.

Thank you for your reply. I had read that it can take a while and flare up again and again...I'm sorry you've experienced this! Miserable isn't it..and all from a cough 😭

I've got awful hayfever this year and the sneezing is crippling me..

Will look into an osteopath, thank you for that!

Thank you for replying, glad to hear it's not come back for you 😁

That’s OK. Hope yours gets better soon and never comes back. Mine was years ago now so definitely a one off, but I still remember how painful it was.

About 6 weeks for me too. It was 20 years ago and I've not had a reoccurence. Hellish at the time. Get well soon.

My first flare up lasted around 4 to 5 months. GP just kept throwing medication at me but it really didn't help at all. The only things that did ease it was a medicated patch (lidocaine) that the GP prescribed and going to an osteopath. The first few sessions were agony, but really eased it.

Now I just get a flare up if I lift something awkwardly or am generally run down/stressed. It really is a miserable condition, so you have my utmost sympathy.

Thanks everyone. I might well ask about lidocaine patches. I'm going on holiday in couple weeks and really hoping it's feeling easier by then! Got a 3 year old to look after and it's been pretty difficult at times, thank god for my wonderful husband who has been holding the fort!

I had this, my flare up lasted about a year. Not as painful as yours sounds but still painful to sleep on, was basically like a constant burning on the left side of my sternum and rib cage. Then one day it subsided, have no idea why as I didn’t do anything in particular to help it along. I hope yours sorts itself out soon.
