Hi

I went to the hospital on Monday and was told i need to have the above carried out.

i was offered general or local anasethetic and opted for local because i'm scared of being knocked out.

Has anyone had the above done just so they can tell me what to expect as i'm quite nervous.

just wondered if it hurt or if i can go back to work same day etc.

TIA

Hi Sweetmonkey

I had the same procedure done 12 days ago - I was given a choice of local or general, initially said local but after procedure explained went with general - SO GLAD I DID!!

When I woke from op, I was very uncomfortable - I can only liken it to my experience of labour pains (though I did end up with C-Sect. so might just be me...) The discomfort lasted for a few hours and after being back on ward at 1pm I was able to go home by 5pm.

I don't work but as had general I was groggy for 2-3 days afterwards so probably wouldn't have been up to it.(did organise friends to have DD's which helped)

After initial pain all now is well but for some light bleeding ..

oh blimey. now im panicking in case i should have chosen general.

the doc said it would only take 10-15 mins and i was worried about being put under for such a short time

thanks for yr quick reply

I remember that my mum had this done, under local, and then picked me up from school! She did say it was quite uncomfortable though.

sweetmonkey · 20/02/2008 14:32

ah ok thanks. i guess it just depends on the individual

sweetmonkey · 20/02/2008 14:50

lol. i'm thinking maybe now i should have opted for general. the doc said they will inject the neck of my womb with stuff like they use at the dentist

i dont think it helped that i couldn't understand him very well either

Sorry - did not mean to panic you, I think I have a low pain threshold!!!

Once the pain relief kicked in it was fine and I didn't need pain killers at home. Having a general wouldn't make you feel great either.

Are you going in as a day patient as I'm sure you could change your mind if you wanted to?

Good Luck, I'm sure you'll be fine..

sweetmonkey · 20/02/2008 15:17

just out of interest how long did you all need to wait for your appointments?

i know it varies from area to area but just so i can get a rough idea

thanks

hi had this done last year, consultant suggested having a general as i would be less tense and it would be quicker and easier. glad i did, stayed in a lovely hospital, had tea, lunch and magazines braught to me, it was like a days holiday.

sweetmonkey · 21/02/2008 11:54

HMM maybe ive made the wrong decision then
I?ve read different stories on line of people who have had it done and like i said before i know everyone is different but the fact the doctor offered it means that it might be common to have it done either way but maybe general would be best.

They don?t offer general for no reason do they?

OP posts:
hifi · 21/02/2008 12:20

they usually dont like doing on nhs as it costs more.

sweetmonkey · 21/02/2008 12:21

Ah ok , thanks

hifi · 21/02/2008 12:22

in my first egg retrieval , ivf, on nhs they didnt give me general, i can still remember the pain, we went Private twice after and they knocked me out.

sweetmonkey · 21/02/2008 12:38

OH god so if you still remember the pain that means it was bad.

i don't know what to do for the best

hifi · 21/02/2008 12:39

sorry sweetmonkey, it was a different op to yours, i dont know how painful yours would be.

sweetmonkey · 21/02/2008 12:41

ok. Well im nervous about being knocked out so i guess i'll just have to deal with it.

i'm sure it will be fine

thank you for your advice and help though tis appreciated
