Hi, so I have a very problematic tooth. It started a few months back, hurting when biting down, some sensitivity but not all the time, tooth just didn't feel right, mentioned it at check up on 14th April, dentist said thought they may be a vertical crack, keep an eye on it. Returned 7 days later as had awful pain in the tooth, he said he thought they were a crack but explained that they are hard to detected so said he would put some medicine in and see if it settles down and would ring the day after; he didn't but in fairness it had settled a lot - two weeks later the pain came back, rang dentist who phoned back and said he would finish the root canal he had started, said all looked good and see me at next check up and gave me some antibiotics, again two weeks later the pain returned and a lump at top of my gum appeared, if I touched my cheek the pain in the tooth was so painful, retuned to dentist he took an X-ray said root looks short then said no actually it looks ok, I'll give you some antibiotics as we haven't tried that I said I had some previously - then he said if it doesn't settle I would need to be referred to a specialist at a cost of £500+ or extraction. It's a upper 4 so in smile line but the antibiotics aren't working and I'm sick of this pain, I can't afford an implant and would have to put the treatment on my credit card as I don't have any spare money at the moment and I also think with it being so problematic and root canal not worked first time and success rate not always good I think I will have it extracted and a small one tooth denture put in ? As anyone had an NHS one tooth denture ? And if so was everything ok or would I better off going private for one. I have also had to go private for a mouth guard as I have mentioned it over the past few years as I smack them together in my sleep but he never answers me - thank you for reading

Normally if a tooth is root filled it has a crown on as the tooth will become weak, so not sure why that wasn’t done ?

if it need to be extracted then with implant or bridge maybe options

a one tooth denture would be a last resort in my personal opinion

I have a one tooth bridge at the front. NHS. It was fantastic for around 15 years then fell out and I’ve had a new one that has been awful. I’m 7 months in and constantly in pain because I feel it’s digging into the gum somehow. My tooth loss was because of failed root canal and I had two of those done at the dental hospital.

A crown on top wasn’t an option and, as the RC didn’t stop the pain in my tooth, would have been pointless anyway.

I too wear a mouth guard or I get pain in a different tooth. The pain in that one settles with the mouth guard and only flares up again once I’ve chew it so much I need a new one. I was referred to oral & maxillofacial before getting a guard though, just to check there wasn’t some he was missing. Maybe ask for a referral?

The lump on gum sounds like you have an abscess. I'm in 60s and had a few extractions over the years, the last for an abscess. I've had upper 5 out years ago and the teeth next to them have gradually moved closer so that you would hardly know there was a gap. Once they start hurting and need antibiotics I think they are better out. There is no pain like it (and I've had three kids with no painkillers!)💐

Have the tooth out and have a denture. I have and you would never know. I was going to have implants, but cannot afford and I'm not bothered now.

Thank you all for your replies sorry you have had issues too . A crown has never been mentioned although at first appt he said when he thought they were a crack and it couldn't be saved I could possibly have a bridge and it be attached to adjacent teeth but if I'm smacking my teeth together it may not be an option - my antibiotics finish today and the pain and lump are still present - I'll definitely ask for a referral
