Swollen right foot . . .

user1488481370 · 26/05/2023 07:33

Yesterday evening my right foot and ankle were swollen.

I haven’t injured it, it was completely painless, not hot to touch or discoloured.

Once I’d sat with it up, rested and drank some water, it went down relatively quickly and this morning it’s completely back to normal. I think I’ve noticed that it seems to swell more than the other one for maybe a week or 2 but it was definitely more noticeable last night. So I’m thinking it’s probably the warm weather? My fingers on each hand were swollen too.

When I googled it came up with the 2 worst case scenarios which were DVT or cellulitis but I don't think that’s the case here as have a lack of any other symptoms and the swelling disappeared quite quickly which I guess wouldn’t be the case if it were either of the above.

Yes, warm weather can make you swell, but it might be worth getting a BP and general check. How old are you ?

user1488481370 · 26/05/2023 07:38

I’m 30, I was just more concerned that it was only one foot that was swollen.

I’m assuming that there’s no bite mark on your ankle/foot ? And that the area isn’t red and hot, like a DVT /
The fact that it’s your fingers too makes me think it’s either heat ( although it’s not that hot at the moment ) or it’s something more generalised 🤔
Do you have any allergies ?
Incidentally I was finding my hands swollen in the morning and GP had no idea why, but I’ve found it doesn’t happen since I’ve stopped drinking.

user1488481370 · 26/05/2023 07:52

No bite mark that I can see and not red and hot at all. It’s been quite hot here, was 22 degrees yesterday.
I do have hay fever and get an annoying, itchy rash on my hands at this time of year (or when it warms up) and I don’t really drink on a regular basis.

If you have allergies then I’d try antihistamine and see if it works

user1488481370 · 26/05/2023 09:05

Never thought of trying antihistamines for it! I don’t tend to take them, I usually just grin and bear it because of the side effects but perhaps worth it as I can’t sit on my bum with it elevated all day with 2 toddlers!

My left foot swelled up so much I couldn't get a shoe on, I noticed the leg was a bit swollen. I thought it might be phlebitis as I've had it before due to dry skin. Called 111. They got my GP surgery to call me phone consultation. GP said 'Come in, I'd like to check for a DVT'. Turned out that was what it was. On blood thinner now. Best to touch base with GP or call 111.

If you push down on the top of your foot, does it bounce back or stay with a dint in it?

user1488481370 · 26/05/2023 09:28

It wasn’t massively swollen, I could still get a shoe on, at the time it left a bit of a dint if I pressed but now it bounces back as it normally would.

@CharlottenBurger did you have to go to hospital?

Not as an in-patient. I had to visit a hospital clinic to have my leg scanned with one of those ultrasonic hand things, to confirm it was a DVT. Took about half an hour. They put jelly stuff on. It's not a big deal except I have to take blood thinner tablets for at least 12 months. But you may not have a DVT at all! I only meant it's just something to rule out.

user1488481370 · 26/05/2023 09:45

@CharlottenBurger i don’t think it’s a DVT as not red or painful and isn’t swollen anymore but I'm thinking I may go to the urgent treatment centre in town to see what they think just to rule it out! Sounds like
you’re recovering well!

Yes, it's not such a big deal. My leg wasn't red and/or painful, just swollen. The blood thinner (Apixaban) means I take longer to heal if I cut myself, I bruise more easily, and I'm not supposed to cut my own toenails in case I cut myself. Have to book appts with a chiropodist at my age! The swelling went down over about 3 weeks. I think you should always get a swollen foot or leg checked out in case some kind of circulation problem needs nipping in the bud? Have you or any of your family had varicose veins?

user1488481370 · 26/05/2023 10:08

Would the swelling go down with a DVT like mine has do you think?

Ive decided against UTC centre as I’d feel a bit daft turning up with a normal looking foot now but I'm waiting on a callback from my GP - they’re usually pretty good so hopefully I’ll be dealt with fairly quickly.

No I agree, anything like this is worth checking out!

And just to add there’s no family history of varicose veins or blood clots.

If it's gone down again it's probably not a DVT, but as always, don't rely on people on MN for medical guidance.
