Any dentist around??

Hey!

back in December I started getting bottom aching/pulsating feeling in my four bottom front teeth. (Had a really bad cold so thought it was related) stopped after a few weeks.

it happened again end of Feb. But no cold was present.

and it’s back again since Monday. Constantly aching/throbbing/pulsating

managed to get an emergency dentist appointment for yesterday. They examined my teeth and took X-rays. All completely normal! Mouth looking very healthy. I’ve had no other dental symptoms. No pain when eating ect. Just this weird pain that doesn’t go away with any painkillers/oral gel/sensitive toothpaste.

dentist said to give it a few more weeks and come back. And possible be referred. Said I could be stressed and to try and track when exactly it’s happening ect. And it could be stemming from somewhere else.
I’m also not clenching/grinding.

I’m honestly at a loss… it’s so uncomfortable.
what the heck can it be? I don’t have any form of cold at the moment either.

I’m not a dentist but have you looked into it being Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Thanks for replying.

I have looked loads into that. The difference with my pain is it isn’t excruciating pain and isn’t coming in waves of shock.

it’s a constant dull achey pulsating feeling.

it’s so hard to describe but it’s really uncomfortable. And only in that one area in my mouth.

Possibly sinus pain. I get it in my upper molars, but o have read it can affect lower teeth. Sometimes I have sinus problems following a cold, but not always. I think also slightly allergy related.

I had 12 months a couple of years ago where I didn't have many colds but lots of sinus trouble. My teeth were often the first indicator, there was also a little bit of movement in them that isn't normally present.

@LibbyL92 do you still get that pulsating sensation? I've similar sensation for over 4 years but nothing was found.

Yep! Had it again a few weeks ago after a moth ulcer.

funnily enough I went dentist yesterday and she asked if it was still happening I said yes (had x-rats ect before and all was normal)

said I could be my gums when I’m run down…

I have no idea.

Also, something else I’ve started to do is if I’m dozing off to sleep (during the day/sun lounger snooze ect)
I’ll bite the tip of my tongue causing me
to wake up very quickly in pain…
wondering if it’s clenching. But again no signs of it on my teeth!

@LibbyL92 it's frustrating not knowing the cause. Mine is 24/7. It's not painful but I just aware of this constant pulsating sensation inside my molar.

Odiebay · 29/08/2024 20:53

Do you have tmj? I do and I also clench my teeth at night. I get this pain in different teeth all the time! Ask you dentist to look for signs on clenching or grinding

Mines my four bottom front teeth.

it’s a weird feeling. Like a pulsing throbbing. Very very aware of it. Doesn’t hurt but uncomfortable and painkillers doesn’t do anything.

I think the next time it happens I will push for further investigation because it’s the not knowing that is driving me mad

I wondered if it was they. But supposedly no signs of it on my teeth. But I’m definitely clenching as I bite my tongue, the tip! Just as I’m dozing off.

how are you managing with tmj?

@LibbyL92 same, uncomfortable but not painful. Painkillers don't have an effect. I've spoken to 2 dentists and 2 maxillofacial consultants already. But because it's hard to describe the sensation, nothing was done apart from x-rays.

What’s your next step?

surely it has to be stemming from somewhere else. I was thinking maybe nerves?

OP posts:
Nets888 · 30/08/2024 12:23

@LibbyL92 I clench so I get it's the nerves. My dentist did say my bite is off on the effected molar so could be that.

What about you? How long does your weird sensation last? Mine is constant.

Have you had any x-rays?

I had X-rays a year ago when I posed this. All was completely normal.

had a check up this week and everything still seemed normal and fine.

mine comes and goes. Normally lasts around a week/10 days goes away for a few weeks/months (when I was tracking it was every 3 months)

I very vaguely remember being a kid and having it normally when I sucked the air through my bottom teeth. Was the same pain. But there’s definitely something else triggering this

You may need a mouth guard. It needs to be bespoke as you will be wearing it the whole night. It sounds like it might be related to grinding/clenching. You may not notice, but the tongue biting thing must be part of it.
The dentist can get a mouth guard made bespoke for you.
The only other thing is to see the GP. If you do make sure you say it's not my teeth, that's been ruled out. Otherwise they will just refuse you and say 'we don't do teeth'
Then I guess they could refer you to a maxillofacial specialist? If it's to do with the bones in your jaw?

MillyMollyMardy · 30/08/2024 22:31

@Nets888 are you tongue thrusting? Have a look at your tongue when you wake in the morning when you have symptoms. If you are thrusting you would normally see scalloping in your tongue edges.

Nets888 · 31/08/2024 07:45

@MillyMollyMardy I can't see any scalloping. It's been 4 years now. What other causes do you think it could be?

@LibbyL92 sorry to hijack your thread.

I have a mouth guard which helps. I also practice relaxing my jaw muscles. I get a scalp and face massage every 3 months too. Make sure your posture is correct... Especially at a desk job.

My posture is terrible!! Maybe it’s that what’s causing it!

Assuming from your username you're in your 30's. I've had this same issue for around 4 months and have spent a fortune on consults, my bite has changed and now the only contact is on my anterior (front) teeth. And I took got dull achy discomfort in my lower four front teeth. Transpires my jaw has grown, unusual for someone my age (30).

I will need braces to correct, and possibly surgery.

It's possibly a route worth exploring, it was only after seeing max fax surgeon and orthodontist that this was spotted. 3 general dentists couldn't give me a diagnosis.
