Chest pain…. Getting worse

Mumof2boysxz · 25/05/2023 18:53

Hi all. I’ve posted previously about this issue, but it seems to be getting worse and I don’t know what I want. Some advice, some support, to know I’m not alone or for people to assure me I’m not dying….

I have what are classified as heart attacks symptoms, but every day. I have pain, crushing, pressure and tightness in the chest; pain in the arms, upper back and shoulders; feeling breathless, lightheaded, dizzy, extremely fatigued and generally unwell.

I have felt like this every day since December, only the pain seems to be becoming worse. I have had countless GP appointments, my last being yesterday, and 2 trips to a&e, this year alone. My blood test results and ECGs have been clear at the hospital each time, and the doctors at a&e didn’t seem concerned about my heart. However, as symptoms have persisted, I went back to the GP to see what I can do next. He rang me yesterday and after explaining my symptoms he just said to go to a&e if it persists and that it sounds like classic cardiac pain. He also gave me a referral for a chest x ray to check for physical injury, and offered anti anxiety medication, which I declined as I’ve had them before and they made me much much worse.

I then rang my dad in floods of tears and panic after what the doc told me. My dad thinks the doctor is covering his own back and has to tell me to go to a&e with chest pain. He told me that him, his own father and his grandfather all suffered from terrible trapped gas, and he thinks I have it. He said it pushes the stomach as it fills with air and can cause chest pain. I haven’t mentioned this to the doctor.

I haven’t had any colds or coughs. I haven’t had COVID at any point that I know about, and my chest is clear with no signs of asthma. My blood pressure, oxygen, and cholesterol levels are all normal. My thyroid is fine, and I have low iron.

I am 25 with 2 children. I have no family history of heart issues - my grandfather had one in his 40s but was an alcoholic and overweight. I drink on very rare occasion, quit smoking over a year ago, never taken illegal drugs, and have no diagnosed health conditions. I go out to walk on a daily basis.

i am writing this in tears and wondering what is the point, as my chest is crushing me and I’m sat at home with 2 small children as DP is on a night shift. I just keep thinking I’m going to drop dead. I’ve tried beta blockers but was then taken off them. I was took off anti depressants after getting much much worse when I started them. I have had therapy, and meditate often.

it feels like there is nothing left to be done. I am terrified I am going to have a heart attack. I want the pain to go away and the worry to go with it. How can I have heart attack symptoms all day every day? How is any of this possible?

please don’t be too tough on me in the comments. I’m struggling enough already and wondering what the hell is the point in my life anymore.

I have similar pain; after numerous cardiac tests; ecgs monitors etc it was determined that it was intercostal rib pain ( which I think is similar to chostocondritis?) the pain feels like you’re having a heart attack. The problem is when it comes on my anxiety goes thru the roof which I think ( probably similar to you) then makes the situation / pain even worse.

I've never know paracetamol be offered for chest pain. It's always morphine. There is more to cardiac problems than just a heart attack so it sounds like they aren't taking you seriously. As I see it you have 3 choices here:

  1. Take your GPs advice and go to A&E and your husband looks after the dc
  2. See your GP again or another GP
  3. Continue as you are

You appear to be putting barriers up to whatever anyone suggests and I'm not sure what you want from this thread.

If I went to a&e tonight, I’d return home with the same pain. Then I’d be back there tomorrow, the day after that and the cycle continues. I don’t know how, me saying going to a&e every single day is unreasonable, Is putting up barriers.

Thank you. Do you get this pain in your chest or just the ribs? I never have rib pain so I’m wondering how it could be related to something like this.

Did they do a d-dimer and rule out blood clots in your lungs? I know it’s very unlikely and far more likely to be reflux but it can happen. Dd had very similar symptoms over a prolonged period and was told it was anxiety, told it was chostochronditis, told it was reflux, prescribed omeprazole and it turned out to be multiple pulmonary embolisms. I would like to think a&e would have rules this out but it took 3x a&e visits for Dd to be correctly diagnosed.

They didn’t mention this but checked my legs for swelling as I am on the pill also.

It’s right in my chest where my heart is which is what makes it feel like a heart attack. You have my full sympathies OP it’s awful. But I genuinely think ( from what you’ve said) this could be what’s the problem. If there was a problem with your heart then it would have shown on the tests you’ve had. Good luck I hope you get some answers

Thanks, I thought so too - I’ve had blood work done which is highly accurate and came back clear, but someone on the thread seems to think I should spend my life in a&e when I have 2 kids 🙄

Personally, I think you should ask for a heart monitor first of all - they can offer 14 day Vio patches now.

I would also consider anxiety/diet towards gut issues.

I had chest pain like you for months - it was all related to my stress.

AutisticLegoLover · 25/05/2023 20:38

If you don't want to take your GPs advice that's up to you. No one is suggesting you spend all your time in A&E. Like I said-I'm not sure what you want from this thread. You could try different anxiety medicine, different PPIs for possible acid/stomach issues. It could be a variety of things but no one here can diagnose you 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks, I think I will - though it worries me when people recommend this, as I then think they think I have a heart problem too! No winning! 😂

I woke up one morning with enough symptoms of a heart attack, enough that 111 decided to send an ambulance as they decided A&E was too far for me to go under my own steam. To cut a long and embarrassing story short my heart was fine but as far as I can tell I had eaten something which disagreed with me - I suspect a dodgy egg - which caused the initial pain and then proceeded to worry myself into a panic attack. The pain was right up around my heart but once I had expelled the contents of my guts it disappeared.

Take the x ray to be on the safe side but I suspect your dad is right. The human body is weird.

Try stopping the e-cigarrettes. They can cause lung inflammation. Also if you're buying cheap ones or from an unrepeatable source they can contain all sorts of metals etc. Perhaps that is causing or contributing to the issue?

Surely you should take the medication suggested by your doctor, since going to A and E has resulted in normal results.
You've had multiple ECGs and blood tests.

It never seems to calm you down though.

This was what I was also going to suggest - give up e cigs.

If clots are in your lungs you won’t have calf swelling.

I have since remembered replying to a similar issue with this poster, so unfortunately I think yes.

AutisticLegoLover · 25/05/2023 20:58

I have vague recollections too.

Madmax1992 · 25/05/2023 21:02

You sound like you have health anxiety, I've had it on and off throughout my 20s so I know how you are feeling. When j was pregnant with my 2nd baby I had a sudden crushing chest pain and shooting pains down my left arm, it wasn't a heart attack and the cause was never found. What you are describing sounds like it could be trapped wind in the chest. There's a good health anxiety forum called no more panic that I use when I'm having a bad patch. I've had phases of spiralling and worrying I'm dying from a lot of different illnesses and Convinced myself that my symptoms are surely a sign of them but they never were xx

Then neither of you respond! The same GP prescribed me Wrong medication for anxiety previously and when I saw a different doc she was appalled at what he prescribed me! But take the short term meds and get on with it! And in response to the plank who agrees, I wasn’t asking for a diagnosis on here - I was asking for others experiences - is this not the GENERAL HEALTH thread? I suppose everyone on this thread is therefore asking for a Mumsnet diagnosis then? I came here for support during a tough time and instead it’s just wound me up all the more - what a lovely community!

What part of, the DOCTOR IS THE ONE SENDING ME THERE do you not understand? How do you block someone on here? I’ve had 2 thanks so much for the concern! I hope you never have to ask for others support - how dare you make me feel ashamed!

How long were you on the beta blockers for?

Swansandcustard · 25/05/2023 21:14

Cardiac pain is not all day every day. When it’s angina it comes and goes, usually related to activity. Unstable angina is more random, but also more dangerous, so turns into a heart attack without intervention.

a full, STEMI heart attack doesn’t carry on for days, months, it just doesn’t. Left untreated most heart attacks result in cardiac arrest. Bloods show very obviously if you’ve had a heart attack due to enzymes excreted by damaged muscle.

Kindly, your pain isn’t cardiac. Your description doesn’t sound cardiac, and the fact that it is chronic and constant screams not cardiac. As the heart is very central to the whole staying alive thing, you get very sick and it needs big things done to stop it. You would not be looking after babies day in day out. You would be sat around unable to do anything because your body is fighting to keep you alive.

I have angina, have had a heart attack, have had unstable angina and mitral valve regurgitation.

It sounds much more like gallstones, or health anxiety. The mind can make us feel very strange. Try the meds.
