@pasok1000 Hi op the pros are that the HPV virus is linked to cervical cancer and I think also throat cancer so it's worth having.

DisforDarkChocolate · 25/05/2023 18:48

I'm not sure what the cons are at all but it reduces your chance of cervical cancer if you're a woman. There has also been work on its impact on throat cancer too. I wish it had been available for my children.

This is for the boy teenager

They can not pass the cancer causing HPV onto women and also protect them (males) from throat cancer caused by HPV.

My eldest son was too old to get it done for free and would cost £450 to do privately over 3 sessions. He is most likely gay so if he’s brave enough to take himself to a GUM clinic would qualify for it free (he knows 2 people who had HPV throat cancer, one died one now battling secondary, wouldn’t wish it on anyone). I am lobbying him!

GayPareeee · 25/05/2023 20:44

Sorry they cannot pass it on if they’ve had the HPV vaccine

StiggyZardust · 25/05/2023 20:51

For boys it decreases the chance of them contracting 9 different strains of the HPV virus. If he were to catch the virus it can lead to cancer of the penis, anus and mouth.
There are very few side effects and from September it's a single dose of the vaccine.

Ozgirl75 · 26/05/2023 23:15

My son just had his HPV a couple of weeks ago, it was fine. No side effects at all, even his arm didn’t hurt. I’m pleased as if he has a female partner in the future he can’t pass HPV onto her, and also he now avoids a number of quite unpleasant cancers himself. I see no down side at all! Apparently in that generation cervical cancer might almost die out, that’s amazing!

Ragged · 26/05/2023 23:40

I knew a eyes-ears-throat doctor, consultant.
He treated A LOT of people with oral cancers. He said those cancers were increasingly common & thought to have become more common because of HPV (in mouth).

Human beings are grotty creatures, what can I say. Good enough reason to want my lads to get HPV jab.

The girls can get hysterical about receiving their jabs, I hope the lads set a better example.

Ozgirl75 · 26/05/2023 23:49

I also read that oral cancers caused by HPV are increasingly common - maybe because of more oral sex with a variety of partners. Either way, the cancers caused by HPV could be wiped out which is just brilliant.

Meggymoo777 · 27/05/2023 01:29

Where I live the vaccine is standard for males and females. 99% of cervical cancers in my country can be traced back to HPV and oral, penile, throat cancers etc can also be attributed to HPV.

My DS is 12 and has had his HPV vaccine this year and I'm really glad he has. I can't see any cons. (And I have refused certain vaccines for him in the past such as the swine flu vaccine).

FloofCloud · 27/05/2023 03:50

DD just had hers, they only do 1 jab now as formula changed.

SoCalLiving · 27/05/2023 04:05

Hi!

I work in Public Health (specifically infectious diseases) and whilst I don't usually work on HPV I know some things about it and work with people that specialize in this area!

Effectively, the HPV vaccine series can help reduce the risk of contracting infections that can cause cancers including cervical cancer. We recommend all genders get the vaccine as it also helps to reduce the risk of other non-cervical cancers such as oral cancer which anybody can get!

Whilst also protecting the person getting the vaccine, it also helps to protect other potential partners in the future as it reduces transmission of the infections to the new partners!

The vaccine is best given to young people before they get exposed to HPV infections (e.g. through sex).

Also, it's been tested for many years and has shown efficacy and safety in clinical trials. This is not a 'new' vaccine and has been used around the world.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

SoCalLiving · 27/05/2023 04:07

As a previous poster also mentioned, it's expensive to get the vaccine as an adult as well! So getting it now whilst its free is definitely a plus!

BobaTea · 27/05/2023 09:53

If you are 18 yr old, do you get 1 or 2 doses?

Chewbecca · 27/05/2023 10:35

DS had it at Uni, one dose at the health clinic on campus.

Choccymumma · 28/05/2023 23:52

My son (17) just missed out on it and I wanted to get it done privately. Is it one dose now for everyone?

1stWorldProblems · 28/05/2023 23:59

The current vaccine also prevents genital warts on both sexes. Not as important as the cancer prevention but also good to avoid

BobaTea · 29/05/2023 08:10

@Choccymumma , it's free on the NHS until 25 yr old.

Ginger1982 · 29/05/2023 08:15

I was too old to get the jag and never really thought anything about it. I've now had an abnormal smear with HPV present and need further investigation. I would support the jag.

Jogrighton · 29/05/2023 08:26

My son missed it at school because of his age and year group, he was 17 at the time. I paid £450 I think for 3 jabs at boots, managed to get points for it!!

I did contact the local vaccination centre that usually did the schools but they wouldn't do it

Choccymumma · 29/05/2023 09:58

BobaTea · 29/05/2023 08:10

@Choccymumma , it's free on the NHS until 25 yr old.

Ah thanks, unfortunately only for people born after sep 1st 2006. My son just missed it!

BobaTea · 29/05/2023 10:17

@Choccymumma does this only apply to boys? My daughter is 2004 and nurse didn't say she is not qualified for the vaccine.

Floraltears · 29/05/2023 10:26

My son had it a couple of years ago, he’s had no side affects (he normally get ill after vaccinations), it’s worth having it while it’s free and protects them.

BobaTea · 29/05/2023 10:29

@Choccymumma just checked, girls after 1991.
