Has anyone been quoted 1.4K for a root canal on one tooth, with a specialist?

I've had a thread here recently about my dilemma of root canal vs the removal of the tooth, but the dilemma is partly due to the extortionate cost of it!
Yes, this is with an endodontist and it's the three-root side tooth that's partly broken (but no pain so far) and he's not sure whether the filling will have enough surface to stick to, but part of fthe tooth is ok - and he didn't say it can't be done.
But I did a same type of tooth just over a year ago with a specialist too and it came to 600 all in, and that was not seen by anyone as low cost! Here it seems like the consultation, scans and the filling is charged on top of the actual canal work which is over 800 on its own. It seems way over the top - esp as they know a crown will be needed too. I wonder if this is a way for the dentist to discourage someone when they aer not keen to do the work / not confident of success?
Is there any pount trying t discuss the cost after it's been officially quoted (I wouldn't think so)?

Oh and the consultation is on top of the 1.4K (about a hundred).

I had a canal recently that cost me £900 and will be another £600 for the crown. That was with the specialist endo dentist as has 4 roots and one of them was tricky. The normal dentist would have been 450 but they recommended the endo and I have dental cover that pays 80 percent so decided to go with that

CatAndHisKit · 25/05/2023 00:01

Thanks, Glitter - you see, that's reasonable, I knew it would be more than 600 with the other endo, as that was last year and tooth wasn't part-broken, but my dentist who referred me this time said it would be 700-800, i'd be happy with 900! SAme here, that at my usual dentist would haev been around 450 but I fear dental work and would pay extra for the specialist equipment and speed.
BUT would you have paid 1.5K? I just don;t know wy the crazy price.

DH paid £900 for root canal in about 2008 - no crown but a gold filling

betwelve · 25/05/2023 09:43

800 plus a few hundred of fees in the preceding appointments in about 2018; considering the massive price rises we've all witnessed in other areas your figure doesn't surprise me at all (but it does worry me a lot).

Shoot4theMoon · 25/05/2023 11:12

I had a root canal 2 months back thankfully it was free as iv just had a baby so I get free nhs treatment for 12 months but on my paper work it came up as £1275

RoseRobot · 25/05/2023 11:14

I recently paid just under 2k for root canal and a crown for DS. Crown fell off a few days later! He will be getting it sorted out for no extra fee. I think the root canal alone was about £1200-1400. I was very shocked.

CatAndHisKit · 25/05/2023 18:59

Ugh! so although it's above average, it's not unheard of, and no point trying to discuss it. It is ridiculous thogh, especially when they aer not sure it will work and then will have to pay for remival as well plus two nasty procedures.
It's just that eve ny referring general dentist who refers regularly ,thouht it would be up to 800.

Did you get that quote from BUPA by any chance?

RoseRobot · 25/05/2023 22:08

That was not through BUPA btw. Direct from the recommended root canal specialist in his uni town. Local dentist suggested the specialist as did a few of my friends who live in the town (and who are not loaded.) Seems the going rate. Maybe it's shot up post Covid?

jaffacakesareevil · 25/05/2023 22:12

Yes I paid £1600 for a private root canal last year.

thewillowbunnies · 25/05/2023 22:13

Sounds about right.

That's why I'm with Denplan. £25 a month, all covered.

Lot to be said for not having the worry of what expensive treatment you might need. Who's got £1k just lying around!

ChrisPPancake · 25/05/2023 22:15

I'm very fortunate that mine was done by an NHS dentist, just shy of 300 for the root canal and crown.

GladysHeeler · 25/05/2023 22:19

I'm paying £200 next week for the dentist to tell me what he's going to do when he gives me an implant.

Even if it was free I wouldn't want it! An hour the appointment is. Why can't he just do his job without telling me all about it first. 😴

Lightsbonaza · 25/05/2023 22:22

I paid £1500 last year. Had an amazing specialist. I would sacrifice a lot to save a tooth (and also appreciate some people have no choice but to lose a tooth)

AnotherOneGone · 25/05/2023 22:26

I've just had my first session (1 1/2 hours) with a private specialist - another 1 1/2 hr session booked. Total cost will be £575 (not including a crown if I end up needing one)

Maddy70 · 25/05/2023 22:33

Jesus. How much? I live in Spain and I have just had root canal and a crown for €750

Maybe look to going abroad. Combine with a holiday?

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 25/05/2023 22:39

I'm afraid I've recently paid similar (funded by my father- very grateful or I would without doubt have lost the tooth). Mine was at a brilliant private practice who specialise in saving teeth other dentists can't.

I already have a few missing teeth so this one was very important for me to save.

If this is your only tooth that would be missing, I'd probably just have it taken out.

diamondpony80 · 25/05/2023 22:47

I paid about £750 for a root canal and crown in Northern Ireland recently. I do have Denplan though so that may have covered some of it. I had quite a bit of work to get done and the doctor advised me to sign up for it before he started.

MatchaAndDoNuttin · 25/05/2023 23:13

My dentist referred me to a specialist root canal centre close to Richmond 6 months ago. I paid £800 for that and then £500 for the crown at my dentist.

Rina66 · 25/05/2023 23:31

I had root canal on my tooth about 10 years ago, it was £480 then, the filling has just fallen out, so it needs to be done again and then crowned. It had also been filled a few times before the root canal 😱 knowing what I know now, I'd have had the tooth removed and an implant put in - this tooth is never going to get better, nothing lasts forever (except the implant). I'm going to end up spending over the years the same on temporary solutions as I would have done on an implant.

HanSB · 25/05/2023 23:43

I paid around 2200 for 2 root canals with an endodontist in London, a few years ago though

CatAndHisKit · 26/05/2023 00:07

Rina did htey say it will last a few years at least?

OP posts:
CatAndHisKit · 26/05/2023 00:10

Maddy too much to organise realistically this time (and still would eed a consultation first) but def something to think about if I need to lose itand have an implant.
Vintage I hope they did save it for long term. I can see why its worth paying over the odds for an important tooth. It would be just one for me (so far), somehow I just can't brimg myself to have it out without trying to treat.

OP posts:
CatAndHisKit · 26/05/2023 00:14

Gladys, yes, I've no idea wgy did I hvae to pay a 100 pounds just for 20min of a comsultation - surely this should only be charged if the person doesb;t go agead with it! But should be absorbed into the 1.4K cost otherwise!
I did havea canal done for 600 all in with hte endodontis hence I'm especially in shock - this is not London or a generally expensive area.
