High bp and cholesterol suddenly

mirages08 · 24/05/2023 07:59

I'm 50.
About 2 stone overweight.
Don't drink or smoke.
But too sedentary.
Dr put me on statins last month as my cholesterol level was 6 (?)
Dr asked me to monitor bp yesterday and its rarely below 150/90
Bad, isn't it?
I'm going to try and see a Dr today (ha!)
Anyone else in the same boat?
It's freaked me out somewhat tbh :(
Never has bp issues before, in fact historically I've suffered from low bp.
What do I do other than lose weight and move more?
Health has been poor some a nasty bout of covid last summer.
Typically dh is away either work and I've got 2 ill dc at home:(
My dad had high bp and dropped dead at 65 :(

Same here on the BP, although my cholesterol is not high. I am now on daily medication (and it turns out loads of my friends are too!). It's fairly common at our age. I've changed my diet a bit to cut out salt and caffiene, and I'm trying to lose weight but the GP has already said that for some it's just genetics. I was upset as you were when this was discovered but I've reframed it now that I'm lucky that it's been identified and I live in a time when I can take medication to sort it. Hopefully you'll be able to get to that point too, but it is a real shock to start with.

Losing weight may lower it but yes it may also be genetic. I developed high blood pressure at 26. Nothing has ever worked but medication; everyone in my mother's family has it. Really, the most important thing with high blood pressure is treat it. It's good to cut salt but do know that a significant minority of people with hypertension aren't sodium sensitive. Exercise is also helpful, and a healthy diet generally.

Yeah.
My dad and mum both had/have high bp
Both heavy smokers though!
Already drink decaf
Will cut out the bit of lo- salt I was using
I feel this could be linked to my long covid tbh (bp and hr went through the roof)

Thank you, yes I am shocked tbh
Historically they've had trouble getting a bp reading it's been so low but...
Got an appointment at 11am today
