2nd Breast Screening?

Hi there , sorry if there is a similar thread to this anywhere - I've had a search and can't see anything.

My mum (50) last week, went for one of the routine Breast screening appointments at the Hospital - she had no reason to be concerned it was just one of the standard appointments sent out to ladies of a certain age. But today shes received a letter to say she needs to attend for a 2nd screening. Obviously my mum is really worried now, (as am I!) the letter doesn't explain why and does little to comfort! Infact, it quite alarmingly talks about her being prepared to spend some time to talk to the consultant and if nessecary a radio-oligist.

Therefore, I wonder if anyone has been through anything similar? Is it possible that it is just like a smear - when they don't collect enough samples? etc... Or does a 2nd screening usually signify a problem? Any reponses are much appreciated. Thank you.

Lots of ladies get called back for second screening - it can be for lots of reasons, the vast majority of which are that the mammogram just wasn't taken exactly right (they are really hard to do). Some will be that there is something odd on the film that needs further looking at, but the majority of these will be nothing sinister.

What happens is that if you are recalled is that they will do absolutely everything in one visit. So what would happen is another mammogram (most ladies will go away after this), then what they call a spot film which is just concentrating on one area if theres an area of concern. If they are still concerned after this they might do an ultrasound, and then possibly use a fine needle to take a tiny sample of fluid and tissue.

ok, thank you very much - that sounds pretty re-assuring. Will pass that onto my mum. x
