Vitamin D Help

Hi all. I recently had a health check up recently and all that came back (luckily) was that my vitamin D is quite low. The doctor recommended I take a supplement of at least 800iu, however I already take a 1000iu supplement daily and have been for a while now.

What can I do to help my body absorb the vitamin D better or is there anything else I should do to raise my vitamin D levels?

Apparently, placing mushrooms in the sun helps them absorb high amounts of Vit D, especially if they're sliced. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6213178/

What did the doctor say when you told them you were already taking a supplement?

MaverickSnoopy · 21/05/2023 18:17

I was diagnosed a couple of years ago with vitamin d deficiency and the doctor prescribed me 2 x 800. What is your level?

After taking 6 months worth it was assumed I'd be within the right level. I had further fatigue and had to fight to be retested. My levels had actually dropped further so I was put on 2 x 800 again. I did some research and apparently you're supposed to take magnesium alongside to help absorb it (in the same way you take vitamin c to help you absorb iron).

You should talk to your doctor. Do they know you already take a supplement? If so what do they suggest?

User17865 · 21/05/2023 18:19

What kind of supplement. My GP contacted an endocrinologist I think and took advice on what to give me. I now take a prescribed supplement that’s in capsules with oil.

Getting sunlight at this time of year in the middle of the day for at least 15 mins would be likely to increase vit D significantly

ModeWeasel · 21/05/2023 18:24

Obviously balance with being careful about sun

PaddingtonTheAngelofDeath · 21/05/2023 18:25

I found the mouth spray increased my levels but the pills had no effect.

Kyse23 · 21/05/2023 18:25

Take more? I take 4000 a day

neilyoungismyhero · 21/05/2023 18:28

I have osteoparosis and take 2 x Evacal tablets a day.

Reallybadidea · 21/05/2023 18:30

1000iu doesn't really touch the sides for me. I took 4000iu a day for 3 months to get my level up to a high normal range (I have osteopenia) and then reduced to 4000iu 5 times a week to keep it there.

Do you not take magnesium or vitamin k with that?

Thegoodbadandugly · 21/05/2023 18:44

Sounds like your not taking enough op you might have to take some more.

Woahtherehoney · 21/05/2023 18:53

Thanks all - I’ll try and get something stronger then. When I said I already take a supplement they just said to carry on taking it but my levels have been low for quite a while (not dangerously low but definitely low) and whilst my iron levels have become normal, Vit D is still low so I want to try and do something about it.

I’ll start by doubling my dose and see how I go from there.

Going outside more will help too.

Newgolddream70 · 21/05/2023 21:03

I've just been prescribed 20,000 twice a week for three months initially. I can't believe how much better I feel!

Lolacat1234 · 21/05/2023 21:38

Make sure you are taking cofactors. Magnesium and vitamin K - both of those will help the vit D go to the right places in the body.

I was told by a pharmacist not to take vitamin k long term, why is that? Can it do more harm than good,?

Pixiedust1234 · 21/05/2023 21:48

I use the better you spray 3,000 with added k2 and I feel a lot better since using it (been 6 months).

I'm now curious about a pp warning about vit k

Pixiedust1234 · 21/05/2023 21:55

Nvm. Just don't overdose on it. So its expected advice really.

While evidence of the impact of having too much Vitamin K in our systems remains limited right now, it’s still important you make sure you don’t exceed the recommended daily intake levels.

I use this vitamin D spray: https://amzn.to/3OygkYG

My levels went from 60 to 120 after taking it for a few months. It’s cheaper than the version with vitamin K, and each bottle lasts about 3 months (the vitamin K one only lasts a month).
