Positive coeliac blood test - no symptoms?

theladylovescupcakes · 21/05/2023 11:01

I had a coeliac blood test done recently as previous bloods showed a low folate level. I've been seeing the doctor since September for dizziness and nausea and no definite diagnosis, awaiting a hospital referral.

However the coeliac blood test came back positive, with a level of 12, where over 10 would be positive. I do t really have any stomach issues, a little bloating and a bit windy, but nothing else. Hospital have confirmed they'd like to do an endoscopy to further test for coeliac disease.

I'm really puzzled! Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm not convinced I have issues, but then worry I could end up having to eat a gluten free diet and that worries me! I'm also cacking it about the endoscopy.

When someone in a family is diagnosed coeliac the others get tested. Often some siblings get a positive diagnosis even though they believe they have no symptoms. So it's very possible not to know. But you have nausea and generally don't feel well so you may be looking for the wrong symptoms. A friend had a constant pain in her shoulder..that was all..and she got a diagnosis after her sister was diagnosed and the pain left. Bodies can react in different ways. Keep going with the tests.
You will get used to gluten free even though its at nuisance at first. Feeling well will be the reward.

@junebirthdaygirl thanks for your reply. I think I've got my head round it a bit more. Hospital have confirmed they do want to do an endoscopy so will worry about it when the time comes. Appreciate your input.

Does not have to be stomach issues
You are unwell.
Coeliac diagnosis and gf diet could be the solution

When I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, the thing I had an issue with was joint pain. Once I was gluten free that went away, but I also realised that things I thought were just normal for me - mouth ulcers, a rash I had thought was eczema, an upset tummy if I ate certain things were all part of coeliac disease.
I've been GF for 25 years, and it can be a PITA. But on an everyday basis it has no impact on my life, and made so much difference to my wellbeing

You are having symptoms though. The endoscopy is quick and at least you will get a definitive answer.

Being gluten free is not such a big issue these days . I am a coeliac main symptom was migraines! Did a blood test for other issues and diagnosed with blood test and endoscopy as coeliac.

Now gluten free and no more migraines and other symptoms I had put down to just being stressed! Feeling way better

Take any pain relief offered and you will be fine. I had unexplained anaemia for years (am post meno) and had a double camera inspection which I was dreading.

It was ok with the sedation. My colon is damaged indicative of coeliac disease but the blood test was inconclusive. A GF diet is ok. I only had mild symptoms (which got worse). People can be gluten sensitive and gluten intolerant.

Thanks for your replies, I think I'm in denial! I was putting the dizziness down to vertigo or similar, (it's brought on when I'm walking any distance) although they've told me it's not vertigo?! I'm now wondering if both things are connected now? Just not sure what's going on.

An endoscopy will be a 15 week wait or thereabouts.

A friend was diagnosed after her twin sister was diagnosed. My friend had zero symptoms. It's quite possible. She's now completely GF as would be causing damage if she wasn't, despite no symptoms.

I was diagnosed ten years ago, only symptoms were a little bit of runners’ stomach. I didn’t think I had any other symptoms but it turned out I was massively anaemic and after a few months on a GF diet I realised lots of other minor things (skin problems, sensitive teeth, hair loss) were clearing up. I think it can be quite insidious and you can very gradually become unwell, so slowly you barely notice it (but you’ll notice feeling better!)

TellKingTutIWantMyMummy · 24/05/2023 17:10

Bloating and wind were my only symptoms, and you’ve gone to the doctor with dizziness and nausea - so you do have symptoms! When you have a positive endoscopy and go on a GF diet? You may find other symptoms disappear that you didn’t even know you had.

booksandbrews · 24/05/2023 17:37

I was convinced it wouldn’t be coeliac because my symptoms were so mild - it absolutely was, confirmed by an endoscopy. Tip for the endoscopy; get the sedation. I brassed it out without and it was awful 🙈 Gluten free diet isn’t too bad - loads of options for eating at home, and you get used to navigating restaurants etc.

Thanks all. It's likely that a 5 day trip to Italy will take place before the endoscopy does, so I'll be full of pasta, ciabatta etc, so a result should be easy gotten!

Italy is actually a great place for coeliacs ! They are very aware.

theladylovescupcakes · 24/05/2023 22:06

I have heard that @cestlavielife! Someone told me they routinely test children for coeliac disease!

My son was diagnosed a few weeks ago via blood test only as he'd had three positive blood tests. He's had no symptoms but a t hospital stay with suspected appendicitis/ bowel infection saw him have bloods which revealed it and it turns out he's likely been feeling crappy for months now he's feeling better- that's to say he didn't know how bad he was feeling
I need to take on the battle of us all getting tested now...

theladylovescupcakes · 24/05/2023 22:28

Wow @Polkadottyas, poor lad. Hope he's feeling better.
