TO CALPOL or NOT TO CALPOL

Hello
Just wondered what other parents do about administering Calpol. Initially, I only gave my 8 month old DD calpol when she had a fever or was obviously in discomfort from illness. However, health professionals (ie my GP) told me to give her calpol every time she is ill on a regular basis. I'm hesitating to do this as when I have a cold, I don;t automatically take paracetamol for it unless I'm in pain. Also, my DD seems to be catching something or another every other week, so if I gave her calpol every time she had an ailment - minor or otherwise - she'd be drinking calpol all the time!!
Just wondered what other MNetters do???

If the coughs and colds aren't making a child feel lousy they're fine.

Its really sad when parents drop a child of at nursery when all the child wants is to be curled up on mum's lap, it breaks your heart .

Its all about how the kid feels IMO

I don't isolate mine with standard coughs/colds. If they are 'off' and feel crap then they prob don't want to play inside p&t groups anyway. I'd prob take them to park for a bit of fresh air.

calpol I give when they seem unweel or have high temp.

Sometimes even wshen they are not displaying obviously symptomes they can eb feeling crap. I try to remember when I've had flu and been al; achey. I'd take pills then though nothing external would be obvioous.

arrrgh got to stop tyuping nwo sttk tsk tsk children alerttt

LOL Slur!

If I kept ds off nursery when he has a bit of a cold he'd never be there! He also normally seems to feel better there than he does at home, there's so much going on it takes his mind off the sniffles. I am very ready to keep him at home if he's obviously feeling unwell, or miserable, or in pain, or has a fever, but not for a runny nose or cough on its own.

As for keeping them away from other kids to prevent infection, you can't protect kids from exposure to cold-type infections, they're everywhere, and I don't think it would be a good idea to anyway - their little immune systems need the practice!
