Bacterial meningitis

My dad has just been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis and covid. They think it's come from an infection in the body. They caught the meningitis really early and got told he will make a full recovery which is amazing. I can't believe how rapidly his health declined in just a couple of hours, it was terrifying to see. Just want to hear people's first hand stories of bacterial meningitis and what we might expect.

I had it at 23. It was caught just in time but I did get septicaemia (sepsis) however, as I am posting this 40 odd years later I must have been ok in the end! I went from feeling fine to blue lights to hospital in the space of a couple of hours.

I don't remember much of it TBH, I was out of it for a while. I stayed in hospital for two months as I was very weakened. I went completely deaf unfortunately but thankfully didn't lose any limbs as some younger people have. Hearing came back in one ear but I remain deaf in the other and the "good one" has deteriorated with age. However I have super duper hearing aids now and my life has been transformed with them!

Your Dad is very fortunate that the infection was caught in time to be treated successfully. Time will tell if there are any residual effects, but he is alive which is more than a lot of people are who had it sadly.

It sounds like a full recovery is on the cards for your Dad, and that is great news. The only thing I really remember is weakness and loss of muscle tone due to being in hospital for so long. But that was sorted with physio and exercise over time. I am sure he will be fine, and best of luck on the journey to full health for him.

Ask away if you have any questions. Even though I had it many years ago, the treatment and diagnostics haven't changed that much.

Thank you, I found this really helpful. Sorry about your hearing loss. It's scary how quick it all happens
