Clueless about contraception - can someone point me in the right direction for advice, info etc

Sex is the last thing on my mind at the moment (5 days post birth), but I really ought to do something about contraception at some point.

I had lots of problems conceiving ds1, and haven't actually used any method of contraception since about 1996 (the pill). I suspect things have moved on considerably and I have no idea what methods are available, and the advantages and disadvantages, and don't really know where to start (short of googling).

My GP has many merits, but he isn't someone who you go to for a long chat about such things. I need to know what I want before seeing him.

Looking for a method that doesn't make one prone to putting on weight or getting depressed.

I imagine midwife/HV will ask you (mine did every visit) you can ask them for information, they usually carry information leaflets round with them. There is a range of options, from short term to long term and hormonal to barrier methods. there is only a choice of a few if you are breastfeeding though. Sites that may be useful are www.ruthinking.co.uk and www.brook.org.uk (both sites are aimed at young people but they still give you the information). Also ruthinking gives you a search facility to find a clinic in your area.

I can highly recommend an NHS Sexual Health clinic. I went to one to update myself on contraception. I had an IUD fitted - the staff were fab (they do approx 5 IUDs per day whereas my GP is lucky if he does 1 per week). Look in yellow pages or ask your HV.

Make sure you speak to a doctor as well as nurses - found them to be a bit vague ( be careful if they seem just a bit too keen on the Mirena)

Thank you both. I will persue those lines of enquiry.

Mw hasn't mentioned anything at all, but I can bring it up.
