Why is my knee taking so long to heal?

At the soft play area my ds rugby tackled me round the ankles as I was coming out of the loo. I came crashing down face first. There was an incredibly sharp pain and I looked down fully expecting my knee to be pouring with blood but it wasn't.

That was two months ago so why is my knee still so painful some of the time? I used to sit cross legged but can't now. There are loads of yoga positions I can no longer do and it even hurts in the night when I change position in bed.

What;s going on?

Has anyone had a bad knee for months which has fully recovered?

You should have had it xray'd. I'd go and see the GP.

Boo.
Would an X-ray be able to pick up cartiledge damage? That's my main fear because that doesn't heal does it?

I'd see a physio first, an x-ray probably wouldn't help TBH as it won't show up cartilege damage.

sounds like you ought to have it examined.Depends which part of your knee is injured. If you fell onto the front of your knee you may have bruised the patella tendon, which is very fibrous and take months to heal, but a fairly minor problem. If you twisted your knee and strained the collateral ligaments at the sides of your knee, that would be like a strain and recovers fairly quickly. If you injured your cruciate ligaments then your whole knee joint would have been pretty swollen and you would have found it very difficult to mobilise when you first did it and you would need physio. An xray wouldnt show anything but the bones, but normally done with a significantly painful knee. So if pain is persisting try taking anti inflamatories regularly,3 times a day, (if you can, caution asthmatics or people with gastric probs), cool and rest, but keep the knee movement going. If you have persistent pain your gp should ref you to knee specialist, as you might need MRI scan which does show soft tissues inside the joint ie cartiledge and ligaments. Hope you get it sorted!

perhaps you chipped a bit,
have a loose body?
does it lock or just hurt?

Spidermama · 18/02/2008 23:21

Wow sarah! Having six toes isn't your only talent then. That was pretty comprehensive. I certainly fell on the front but was turning at the time so there was a twist involved. I'm gratified to learn the healing timescales as it could yet be something which will sort itself out.

Slarty it doesn't lock as such but there's a very painful clicking which happens when I am straightening sometimes.

I have hope now.

Just wanted to clear up a small point that I do only have five toes, but not the prettiest feet! My hubbie finds them a real turn off, and thats his nick name for me!

PS think you ought to get knee looked at properly!
