Idle musings..on us all being totally ripped off buying paracetamol for our children.....

I was just thinking as i came out of the chemists

I paid £3.17 for a 250 mg ( ml?) bottle of lloys pharmacy paracetamol suspension for my children

tablets cost about 2p /1000

I am sure the suspension is pricey and the bottle will tip the balance but hey? Is it not the case that the drug companies are totally cashing in on our under 10's being unable to swallow tablets?

I think so ...someone with more knowledge can convince me otherwise!

It's a rip off. Once mine were over 6 I bought Panadol; dissolvable paracetamol. No sodding e-numbers either. Dissolve in a little water, give with a syringe and then follow with a glass of water (or whatever they drink). Still not as cheap as your bog standard tablets but at least useful for everyone in the house.

yes i was - but how have you sussed me oops!

Yes I agree with you. I wonder at what age it would be safe to crush "normal" paracetamol (obviously with the dose calculated appropriately and safely) and mix it with something that a dc would take. (jam or something)?

Perhaps if there is a doctor or pharmacist on the board tonight they could further advise...

bossybritches · 18/02/2008 21:04

Why pay for it?

You can go to your Gp & get 100mls of Paracetemol AND Ibuprofen per child on a regular basis. Don't even need to see the GP see the nurse.

AitchTwoOh · 18/02/2008 21:05

is it not free from the pharmacy? it is in scotland.

i think doctors would offer it if they thought i was worthy!
the gp said give ds paracetamol and nurofen together but no offer of a nice free script - instead pennies change fro £10 - 2 bottles ibuprofen -1 paracetamol

Paula - of course he won't offer tis off his budget but kids are entitled to free drugs. Try asking him or the practice nurse.

onepieceoflollipop · 18/02/2008 21:11

Although children's prescriptions are free in England, my GP would not take kindly to me attending the surgery with the main purpose of asking for scripts for paracetamol and/or nurofen. I suppose I could ask if we were there for something else, I would feel a bit cheeky/unreasonable doing so - I don't know why but I would.

Wilkie · 18/02/2008 21:15

A lot of pharmacies run 'Minor Ailments Schemes' for calpol etc.
ASk your GP/HV for your nearest ones.

All you do is take your child's medical card along to the chemist and tell them what you need - they will give you the generic stuff rather than the branded stuff but I NEVER buy anything like paracetamol syrup or ibruprofren for my DS.

Lidl do their own brand paracetamol suspension. I can't remember the price and it will be more than the tablets, but much cheaper than calpol.

They also do a nurofen equivalent.

Madlentileater · 18/02/2008 21:19

re the crushing up tablets suggestion- just thought I'd share that until I was about 20 I hated jam but didn't know why, till it came back to me that was how they gave me medecine in hospital when I went to have my tonsils out! all those jam eating years wasted!

Nutella then instead!

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 18/02/2008 21:24

yes i agree with a lot of you

I guess i would feel wrong asking for it free - on prescription

I just think i should be able to buy it at cost...not pay silly inflated prices for unbranded products

Join Boots health club, their own brand paracetamol and ibuprofen for children are half price if you are a member

onepieceoflollipop · 18/02/2008 21:27

Great saltire - thanks I will look into that.

AitchTwoOh · 18/02/2008 21:27
