Hi all,

Looking for those in the same boat or who have had this before. For reference I did have an overactive thyroid last year which I am medicated for and blood test a week ago showed I am in range. I also have anxiety and take Sertraline which has helped massively. I did have low ish iron and I took supplements.

Heart palpitations are doing my head in. Heart will start racing randomly, as soon as I think about my heart it will go mental, I feel and see my pulse in my throat and even when sitting relaxing on sofa can feel my heart beating so much so I can see my clothes move. I was prescribed propranolol when diagnosed with overactive thyroid which I do take.

I had a 24hr monitor in December and everything looked normal.

I am just fed up of it, they drive me insane and like I can’t enjoy my life because my heart is either racing and doing something stupid. I understand the anxiety could cause if but most of the time I don’t feel anxious when they happen.

Have you been checked for other deficiencies? Iron deficiency causes palpitations.

User17865 · 13/05/2023 17:10

Low folate did this to me. Folic acid supplements sorted it out.

I had similar and a cardiologist suggested I try magnesium supplements. I don't know if there was a real or psychological effect but the palpitations are much better now - I still get some occasionally but they don't drive me insane and stop me sleeping any more.

Yes iron was borderline but I take a supplement x

How much propranolol?

potplant · 13/05/2023 18:13

How old are you? This was my first symptom of the menopause.

CatsForLife · 13/05/2023 18:16

I’ve been plagued by this too, and totally understand how you feel. Mine is/was anxiety-linked and I found my body was sort of stuck in a fight/flight response. I’m also peri menopausal and don’t think this helps. I’ve started being better at taking a multi vit and this seems to have improved things. Also been trying to manage my stress better. However, when mine at there, they are there all the time, even when I wake in the night. I’ve been checked too, and nothing wrong with my heart.

Yes. I have had them daily for over a year. It is debilitating. Had all the tests. Nothing. I've tried magnesium- not made a difference.. @EveryoneButSam which type did you use?
OP, you have my sympathy. I've got a cardiology apt (over the phone?!) soon so hoping someone will take it seriously. Prob peri-meno related but hrt I took before didn't help and nor did propoponl - only thing that does funnily enough is a few glasses of wine!! (But that triggers the migraines!) ugh

I developed them badly during the menopause. I also had a 24hr monitor and a diagnosis of superventricular tachycardia. Not serious at all and it tails off in older people.
I'm almost 50 and barely get them now.

How much propranolol?

I was prescribed 40mg 3 times a day when my thyroid was overactive but had to temper it down as it made me so tired

I am 35 so I really hope not as I want another baby before I completely dry up 😁

Instant coffee, some ground coffees and any energy drinks, all give me palpitations.

I cut all that out last year as it did the same to me

Should add, energy drinks like red dull were the first, then instant coffee and now some ground coffees. Started when I was mid thirties.

anunlikelyseahorse · 13/05/2023 18:53

And when I don't drink enough....I'm shite at keeping my fluids up.
