Tooth extraction 4 days before holiday?

A wisdom tooth and a molar if that makes a difference. Will I feel ok if I have them pulled on the Tuesday and go on holiday on Saturday? Or will I still be in pain and struggling to eat?

I felt pretty awful for a week after having my wisdom tooth out. I went to work but it was so hard as my job involves talking all day. It took two weeks and a course of antibiotics to feel pain free.
I would have had a shit holiday.

BriarHare · 13/05/2023 07:12

I had all 4 wisdom teeth out and felt perfectly fine.

Myknewname · 13/05/2023 07:12

I would try and rearrange the dental appointment. If you're away and in pain, get an infection, it could be harder for you to get treatment.

lljkk · 13/05/2023 07:13

Pain should be gone immediately. I had a rotten wisdom tooth pulled 2 days before a big trip; no regrets, instant recovery.

Myknewname · 13/05/2023 07:15

Those saying instant relief etc, were fortunate. I had one wisdom tooth removed, it was fine. I had three wisdom teeth removed, I couldn't eat solid food for two weeks, got an abscess and was in great deal of pain. You won't know until you've had it done, how you're going to feel.

Monkeytapper · 13/05/2023 07:16

Should be ok, but aware of dry socket

QuintanaRoo · 13/05/2023 07:16

Holiday is in the U.K., though obviously no idea where the nearest dentist is and don’t want to be wasting time trying to find a dentist on holiday. I have antibiotics for a long term health condition so am on daily high dose cephalexin and amoxicillin so less worried about an infection but concerned about possible dry socket.

Yeah, think I might rearrange. I’m meant to be mountain biking all week which can be teeth rattling enough without abscesses and pain!

Ahhh yeah I wouldn't risk it. UK hol and background antibiotics are encouraging but I recently had my lower wisdom tooth out under general and it took 2 weeks to feel normal again. Admittedly it was under quite traumatic circumstances but I still couldn't open my mouth fully or even smile 4 days after.

Hope your op goes well. Are you having a general?

Just having sedation and to be honest it was a fight for that. They seemed convinced I’d be ok with either local or gas and air!

I am really, really scared and worried the sedation won’t be enough

Dry socket can be treated with amoxicillin 🙂

mrsblueskyeye · 13/05/2023 07:31

I would rearrange. What happens if you get a dry socket? You could do be in agony, depending on where you're going on holiday of course!

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 13/05/2023 07:34

Depends why you’re having them out? If you’re getting them out because infection and you’re in pain then I would get them out before your holiday and you’ll probably be pain free for your holiday.

I had a few teeth out as a kid with no sedation and it was fine. Mouths heal quickly thankfully!

I’m not in pain as long as I don’t eat on that side of the mouth and I’ve been 18 months waiting for them to be sorted so guess I can wait a bit longer.

Is it upper or lower wisdom teeth? Lower I was fine the next day. Upper took alot longer. You'll need to be careful not to get dry socket. Salt rinses, not eating food that can get stuck in the hole etc. If you can put it off until after holiday might be better.

friskybivalves · 13/05/2023 07:55

Huge gamble I would say. I had a molar out on the Tuesday and headed off for a weekend mini break for my birthday. Spent whole of Friday and Saturday nights lying in admittedly lovely hotel room bed with my entire head clanging with the pain of dry socket. DP snoring happily. I have never been more miserable. Nowhere to escape to... Painkillers not touching it. Then roaming around in the unfamiliar dark room trying not to wake him up but couldn't just lie still. The thought I would then have to get on a mountain bike the next day 😮. It was bad enough we had booked a potter round a stately home.

friskybivalves · 13/05/2023 08:00

Forgot to say that my entire focus was on my tooth. I was chomping oil of cloves on a huge wad of cotton wool (attractive). Couldn't eat. Couldn't drink. Hallucinated about finding a chemist in Norfolk who would sell me opiates (reality: paracetamol from a petrol station). Don't do it ...

QuintanaRoo · 13/05/2023 08:18

Lower wisdom tooth but upper molar

friskybivalves · 13/05/2023 10:42

I just think - if you've waited this long, why not wait a couple of weeks longer for safety's sake?

mosiacmaker · 13/05/2023 12:08

Omg definitely rearrange! I was shocked at how horrible having my wisdom teeth out was! And if you’re not super careful you can get a dry socket. Not worth it.

mrsjareth · 13/05/2023 13:51

I had a lower molar out on Tuesday. It's now Saturday and the pain is just as bad as it was on Tues. I've rang 111 cos I think I need antibiotics. I'm due to have the same tooth on the opposite side of my mouth taken out this Tuesday coming, there's no way I'm going ahead until the first one is better healed.

Rearrange the app until after your holiday OP, it's not worth the risk.
