Umeboshi plums - this woman seemed to think they're the devil's work...

A friend of mine who is studying dietetics in the States recommended umeboshi plums to help with my morning sickness.

I went into a health food shop this afternoon and asked for them.

The woman behind the counter (rather tersely): Don't take anything for morning sickness. Just get through it.

Me: I don't want to take anything, I'm just looking for some dried plums.

Woman: my son's 49 now and my doctor wouldn't give me anything for morning sickness which is just as well because that's when everyone got Thalidomide. I wouldn't be just taking anything that anyone tells you.

Me: Yeah, I know - but plums aren't drugs, they're just fruit!

And so on. Anyway, has anyone tried them for morning sickness and if so where did you get them, cos I'm guessing it wasn't in my local health food shop!

Gosh, I love umeboshi plums - I get my brother to bring me them from Japan. I have seen them for sale here in Japanese shops but I never heard of them as a morning sickness remedy.

Health food shops do seem to specialise in grumpy staff.

Nibbling on them does seem to help with nausea, my friend gave me some when I was pregnant, but they are a strange sour taste. I preferred a mint or a cracker.

I love umeboshi plums, 2, but havent seen 1 in years. I go off salty food in pregnancy so wouldnt help my nausea, personally.

They were used in a trial test thing on americas next top modle on one of the early "cycles" one modle spat them out as they were disgusting she said, none of the girls liked them.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Lulumama - I said to myself last time I was pregnant that next time I would buy sea bands and I forgot; I'm 14 weeks now and dunno if it's worth getting them now!

I wonder if I'd like them - I read they taste of citric acid and I went mad for the stuff last time I was pregnant and ended up eating loads of those sour strips you get from the sweet shop... Reckon plums would be healthier!
