Endoscopy fears

Hi I have an endoscopy on Saturday due to problems swallowing food that started four weeks ago. I am terrified I think more of what could be wrong than the actual procedure itself anyone else had these issues ? Or and endoscopy would love to hear from you thankyou 💖

Yes. Had one. Asked for and got the sedative beforehand (think I actually dozed off at one point). The only thing is you'll need someone to take you home and stay with you for 24 hours.

Willowkins · 12/05/2023 00:28

Oh and I know you're jumping ahead to the results but see if you can make a mental note (or put it in your calendar) to worry about it in 2 weeks time or whenever you're likely to get the results..

HundredAcreOwl · 12/05/2023 02:36

Yes, I've had an endoscopy. I also opted for the sedative, and will again if I need another endoscopy. As @Willowkins says, you'd need someone to drive you and stay with you. I did actually feel fine, not unusually sleepy, but presumably it can affect people differently.

I only felt slight discomfort, but did feel embarrassed by the noises that came from my stomach (and in my case probably from my oesophagus!) - no need though, as those doing the procedure will have heard it all before!

Although I wouldn't look forward with joy to having another, I certainly wouldn't hesitate if it was thought necessary 😊

Hope Saturday goes well, and that you soon have a diagnosis 😊 It helped me a lot actually having a name for my swallowing/food retention problems!

Good luck, do say how it goes if you want to 😊

Problems with swallowing food can often be related to reflux issues. I suffer from gerd and often feel like food is sticking in my throat. Anxiety makes it worse.

I haven't had an endoscopy but my mum had to have one along with a colonoscopy. So she had to have a sedative. They did her endoscopy and then turned the trolley round and did the colonoscopy.

I went to get her when she'd come round from the sedative and asked the nurse if they'd found anything. The nurse said it was completely clear although she did have a small hiatus hernia. So I said to mum that was good news and she didnt say anything. Later I questioned her why she wasn't happy and she said it was because they never did an endoscopy on her. I pointed out that they must have done because they knew about the hiatus hernia, but she wouldn't have it. The sedative was so good, she couldn't even remember the procedure.

I hope the same happens for you. 🙂

Sunnynat16 · 12/05/2023 07:53

Thankyou so much for your replies I'm feeling allot better about the whole thing now. I do have a hiatus hernia which I'm hoping is causing my swallowing issues but I will know for sure tommorow thankyou

Nicetoseeyou1980 · 12/05/2023 10:26

I've had a few, if they can do it through the nose it's so much better.
Honestly it's really not that bad and it's very quick.
Obviously the outcome will be a worry but hopefully it's just reflux which is easily sorted.
Good luck.

Glitterb · 12/05/2023 10:32

I had one last year and very much like you I was really worried about it. I couldn’t have the sedative in the end so had to do without, my advice would be to relax as much as possible and mine was over in probably 4/5 minutes. The worst part is probably when they blow air into your tummy, luckily mine was absolutely fine and I was allowed to leave pretty much straight after. My throat was sore for a few days (understandably!) if you are able to have sedative then I would go for that!

Sunnynat16 · 12/05/2023 10:57

Thankyou did anybody have problems swallowing food etc ? I was fine this morning but been on the internet googling and now I'm a mess crying thinking I have cancer again I am so happy it's tommorow as I can't go o. Like this. I really feel for my partner I've been horrendous to live with this past two weeks

OP posts:
Glitterb · 12/05/2023 11:07

I didn’t have problems swallowing but I was seen on a 2 week cancer pathway due to the fact I have significant oesophageal cancer in my family. I was worried as my brother had cell changes and I have the same symptoms. Stay off google and try to stay as calm as possible, you will likely know tomorrow if anything looks suspicious.

Hi yes I'm on the two week pathway due to how fast my swallowing problems have progressed. I can swallow but food is getting stuck in throat or it feels like I have food at back of throat all day also food stays on chest area and sometimes heartburn. I've just ate rice pudding and can feel it all in my throat its awful

Alargeoneplease89 · 12/05/2023 12:27

Just go for the sedation, I have them regularly so it doesn't bother me but it's not a very pleasant procedure. Hope all turns out OK.
The staff are generally very nice in these departments (I've been to several different hospitals).

mygulletisamullet · 12/05/2023 12:27

I’ve had several endoscopies in the past few months because swallowing has become increasingly difficult. I’ve always had problems swallowing which was basically ignored by any dr I’ve seen because I was “managing” The sudden onset of severe symptoms and me finally losing my shit over the lack of interest in getting to the bottom of it eventually prompted a full investigation.

Im not in the U.K. so was not given a choice of sedation - sedation is standard here - so the procedure itself was always fine. I have no recollection.

Some I experienced pain after, some not. It depends on what they did. I felt miserable at the time, but it was actually manageable in hindsight. The irritating thing was I was told to take paracetamol for pain, but I couldn’t swallow them so 🙄 it took a while for the penny to drop I needed to be stocked up on liquid paracetamol so once I started that, things improved.

The other thing I struggled with after the procedures was constipation. I’m constipated anyway (sorry, TMI) but once a gentle laxative routine was put in place, I also felt so much better.

These sound stupid but when I’m stressed and sore, rational thought goes out the window.

In terms of any feedback immediately after the procedure, ask them to write down their observations and findings or have someone to listen with you. My memory after sedation is patchy even though I was alert in the moment.

I had biopsies taken in two of the procedures - over 30 sites in total. I was well prepared by my doctors so I wasn’t too fearful and didn’t read anything in to the number taken or the results. A biopsy does not necessarily mean they are looking for cancer. Many benign conditions of the oesophagus exist and are diagnosed by biopsy or by ruling out cancer.

Just hang in there - take it one day at a time.

If you feel like you are being difficult to live with, just be honest with your partner in that you are terrified and stressed. I’m sure they’ll understand.

I suddenly developed an issue with swallowing food or drink. Mine was a combination of anxiety and anaemia. It took me a long time to start to be able to eat properly again and I still have issues with it occasionally, especially when taking tablets. It doesn't have to mean it's something serious, though having the endoscopy will be able to tell you that for sure. I hope it goes well tomorrow and whatever is causing your issue is easily resolved. I have to say, I have a huge fear of ever needing an endoscopy so anyone who does have one I think is incredibly brave.

Did you have any heartburn etc ? I feel likey symptoms change all the time I didn't have pain at first now I'm getting heartburn I can swallow bit can feel everything

Bretoncrepes789 · 12/05/2023 12:39

Op, please don’t be embarrassed to make a bit of a fuss and say you are extremely anxious.

The staff are generally lovely in endoscopy but they have long lists to get through. It’s in their interests and yours to get you through this as quickly and smoothly and effectively as possibly. Ask them to give you the max medication or you fear you will panic half way through.

You will definitely need another person to get you home though, good luck xxx

HundredAcreOwl · 12/05/2023 16:32

Yes, like you I can swallow past my throat, but food (and sometimes liquid) frequently feels stuck partway down my oesophagus - I have been diagnosed and I do not have cancer or anything terminal...

My doctor referred me for the endoscopy thinking I had a hiatus hernia - I don't, but if you know you do, presumably they just want to rule anything else out. They took biopsies during my endoscopy, again I think just to rule anything else out, as it was apparently clear on the screen what I had!

I do find stress, worry make symptoms/effects worse (as they seem to for everyone in my online support group, and for the couple of people I know with a hiatus hernia); I actively try to manage those now and it makes a significant difference for me. I know it's much easier said than done, but please try not to worry...

I have no problem saying what my illness is if you want, but it's quite uncommon and Dr Google is not particularly helpful regarding it!

Good luck tomorrow 😊

mygulletisamullet · 12/05/2023 17:27

I didn’t have heartburn prior to my procedures but do have it now. It’s manageable with prescription grade antacids

A PP has made me wonder whether it’s worth pointing out that there is a difference between the sensation of foods/liquids being stuck vs foods and liquids actually being stuck ie. Impaction

prior to endoscopy I had a couple of osophagrams (sp?) which determined it was a physical obstruction rather than just the sensation of one.

I think cutting straight to the endoscopy is fine though as the osophogram didn’t actually serve a purpose… it only confirmed they really needed to do an endoscopy!

For all my issues, doing the endoscopy was really worthwhile and my quality of life is so significantly better for having done it. Hang in there.

HundredAcreOwl · 12/05/2023 17:43

Yes, I sometimes have heartburn and indigestion, not often for me and not usually too uncomfortably, although today was really painful for a few minutes, so I've noted it and what was happening beforehand, in case there's a pattern.

Sunnynat16 · 12/05/2023 18:48

Yes sometimes food feels stuck at base of my throat I now can't eat solids due to this as I feel like I'm going to choke today has been horrendous. I think I'm more scared I was eating normal and feeling fine a month ago and now I can't eat ? I'm living on soup and a soft diet it's all happened so fast I'm hoping it's just gerd

OP posts:
HundredAcreOwl · 12/05/2023 19:47

Hopefully it is something really simple to sort. And hopefully you may have some indication tomorrow, but even if not, as pp said, it should be a firm step forward in working out what's wrong and how to sort it.

A month must seem a really short time to have gone from 'normal' (whatever that is!) to really having to think about what you eat and drink.

Fwiw, it helps me if I can take as long as I need to eat, be as relaxed as possible (e.g. no ongoing arguments), not worry about leaving food. None of this may affect you at all of course! I also find, whatever else doesn't want to go down, crackers with brie on top usually does despite the harder texture of the biscuits - oh, and chocolate cake and cream 😊 Just my personal findings for my version of my condition!

It did help me having a diagnosis, but more especially being able to start putting a couple of things in place which helped me feel the illness wasn't controlling me the whole time. I think feeling completely at the mercy of something unknown was what I found hardest and scared me the most, far too many 'what ifs'!

Very best of luck 😊

vipersnest1 · 12/05/2023 19:55

It really could be anything, @Sunnynat16, although naturally we all think about the worst possible outcome.
I was put on the two week pathway due to bowel issues (I'm sure you won't want me to go into them here!) and I'd never even considered that it could be due to cancer, but I still felt that fear all the same as it was suddenly a possibility. I was very relieved to be told I t was all clear, although I still have the problem.
I hope you will get better news than you are currently expecting. Flowers
(Just to add, I have problems swallowing larger tablets, but I know I have a bone spur on my cervical spine, which is likely the culprit.)

Sunnynat16 · 13/05/2023 13:44

Hi everyone thankyou for all of your lovely supportive messages. Well I went for endoscopy and ended up being sedated as I couldn't tolerate the camera with only spray the staff were so lovely to me. The results were nothing abnormal nothing at all the relief I'm feeling right now I can't put a price on however I'm so confused at the same time as I still can't swallow solids. Going to make a GP appointment on Monday and discuss further tests as doctor said sometimes esophagus becomes lazy etc?
