Is Prozac any good for PMT?/Has anyone taking it for PMT

My PMT is getting worse. I woke up this morning and my breasts are so sore it hurt to put my bra on, and that's just the physical symptoms. I feel so irritable and a bit down in the dumps but not hugely so (I don't think it's depression).

I only seem to be getting 2 good weeks a month where I feel fine, the 2 prior to period are just awful.

My GP recommended Prozac as a last resort for PMT but I'm not too happy about taking AD's. Tried the usual evening primrose, vitamins b's, magnesium, but nothing seems to work. Also tried reflexology & it did nothing for me.

my dr prescibed me prozac for pmt but it said in the info it can ntake up to 2 weeks to work which means if you take it at the start of pmt by the time it worked pmt and prob af would be over.!!!!

so i didnt take it, she suggested herbal supplement "AGNUS CASTUS" and i can honestly say it changed my life! you need to take it awhile for it to start noticing. but honestly my pmt was so bad i considered leaving family home, i was crying and miserable constantly. do try it, you can get it from all health food shops

I get really bad PMT (terrible mood swings). I am taking an AD, Citalopram, for PND/anxiety. The PMT does seem to have improved.

Evening Primrose Oil is supposed to be good for physical symptoms such as water retention and sore boobs but I don't get these.

Agnus Castus works on your pituitary (sp?)gland to improve its functioning, balance your hormones. I took it for a while and things did improve. You need to take it for 3 months in a row to get the full effect as these things take time. There are other herbs: Motherwort is one, and I think Red Clover is another, that might help. You can get them in a compound tablet.

i am sure there is one beginning with 'B' thats meant to be good too but cant think of the blessed name.....

charliechaplin · 18/02/2008 16:07

I take Agnus Castus, which has helped a little, plus Magnesium-OK which is a 'womans' supplement of all the PMT vitamins & stuff. Dosn't really help much...

Shaniece · 18/02/2008 17:56

Thanks for your replies. I did try Agnus Castus but kept forgetting to take it , so didn't notice any difference. I am useless at remembering to take tablets- I know some people that can take up to ten tablets a day - I struggle to remember to take one. Magnesium-OK didn't work for me either...

You might not remember to take an AD either then?

what strength evening primrose poil did you try and how long for?

the other recommendation is exercise

and a low gi diet to balance blood sugar levels which can impact a lot on pms

ZippiBabes · 18/02/2008 18:41

i would be wary of taking ads if i could avoid them

Shaniece · 18/02/2008 18:42

sky - I can manage one tablet a day but any more I just can't do it.

Summerfruit - So your GP prescribed fluxotine for pmt? (is that prozac?). Were the side effects awful?? What strength? How long do they take to work?

Zippi - Yes i do exercise and it does help. They were high strength evening primrose, have taken them every day for the last few months.. Don't know much about a low gi diet - will have to look into it.

oh this is veyr useful thank you - have only had 3 periods since birth etc. and they have been dreadful- this last one was just awful.

shall look into the agnus castus, wonder if you can take whilst breasfeeding though (probably not, like everything else)

Shaniece · 18/02/2008 19:12

Summerfruit - What strength did he prescribe? I was wondering if I could take it for just the two weeks before period? Threre again, I will probably forget.
