I have decided, for whatever reasons, to opt for single jabs not the mmr. So I would like to know where I can have them done locally.

At his hib booster, I asked the nurse, who referred me to the health visitor. I had a doctors appointment today, who just said ' I don't know, look on the internet for a doctor in Harley street'.

So out of desperation I phoned the HV. Who said 'we arent allowed to tell you'. I answered that I have made up my mind to do them, I just need to know where I can pay to have them done locally. 'we arent allowed to advise you on this'. I stated that if I didnt know, I could end up not vaccinating my son. 'It's govt guidelines, we arent allowed to advise you'

Bloody hell! this is irresponsible surely. I don't want to talk to them about the mmr, I have made up my mind, and know what the govt guidelines are, I just wanted advice on where there may be a clinic where I can have them done!!!!! So, in reality, if I can't find anywhere ds really COULD end up not immunised.

ARRGGGHHH!!!!!

Oh dear...cock up on the web site there by the sounds of it.

We used them some years ago now for dt's who are now over 6yrs. It all went very well and we were happy.

TBH I can't see the problem here. To opt for single vaccinations is against current government and health policy so of course they are not going to assist you. Perfectly reasonable.

Good luck though, I hope you find what you are searching for........should have come to mumsnet first

Mmm, but wordgirl, my HVs managed to say "we don't recommend weaning until your baby is 26 weeks, but if you choose to disregard that advice and wean at 17 weeks then this is what you should do in order to do it reasonably safely..." (and this not even to an individual parent who had already decided to wean at 17 weeks, but to an undifferentiated group of mothers of 12-week-old babies).

So, OK to do that but not to tell an individual parent who has already decided on single vaccines where she can get them? These strict guidelines that only allow them to advise on what's government policy must be using some new and interesting definition of the word "strict" with which I was previously unfamiliar...

Breakspear medical is extremely good, they have been giving singles for 20 years. Had my DS's jabs there.

Portandlemon the advsie about weaning is in line with the DOH's official policy. Not giving your child MMR is not in line with their policy why should they advise on something they don't agree with and have no training or control over

PortAndLemon · 18/02/2008 18:13

Actually I don't particularly think they should advise on where you can get single jabs so much as I think that they should offer less ambiguous advice on weaning. No matter how the introductory comments were phrased, the subtext of the weaning talk came across as "it's perfectly fine to wean at 17 weeks, and if your child isn't eating serious amounts of solids by 6.5 months then that's bad, so really you probably ought to start before 6 months even though, of course, that's not the official advice". Plenty of HVs go further than mine and specifically tell mothers not to wait until 6 months.

(background/statement of interest: DS had combined MMR; I didn't like his reaction to it so he will be getting single jabs for his booster. DD will probably get single jabs for the first dose as well. DS was also weaned before 26 weeks largely as a result of the message I got from the HVs (I had been intending to wait to 26 weeks until then). DD will be waiting until 26 weeks (or thereabouts -- I'm not going to worry about a week or so either way))
