Vomiting bug - incubation period?

Just wondering how long a bacterial rather than viral bug takes to incubate? I know viral is generally a day or 2?

DD (2) went into a&e sat lunchtime as had fallen off a chair and split chin open :-( By 6.30 pm she was vomiting (though totally ok otherwise) so we spent whole eve in a&e again in case it was concussion. During which time she did one dodgy nappy indicating more likely gastro.

Just wondering if it is likely a coincidence or if she could have picked something up on her first visit (about 4.5 hours between that and the vomiting starting)?

She has managed to keep 1/2 piece toast down last night but vomited again this morning. Taking water (but less than usual) but cant get her to touch those rehydration mixes of course. Also doesnt do lollies, juice or anything else that might help.

How long is this likely to last?
thanks
alice

ohh poor dd! I've got it too (but w/out damaged chin), if that's reassuring at all. Feeling v. rough - having trouble keeping even sips of water down.

It all depends on the stregnth of her immune system. You do not know whether she was becoming ill before you took her to the hospital. Ice lollies are ok, so's juice or flat lemonade. Give her little bits often rather than big gulps. Once she has not vomited for a few hours and is able to keep the fluids down give her a bit of toast and take things from there. If she has a fever or lethargy I'd take her to see the GP. As long as she's taking water and is weeing then this is ok. It's doubtful whether she picked something up and started vomiting in such a short space of time.

Thanks - unfortunately she vomited again today (first time since monday, but also first time on anything like normal food rather than plain toast) so its clearly not gone. 2 dodgy nappies since sunday.

I hadnt expected it to go on this long?!

My ds had it started last thus night lotsof vom, vommed once the next night then the next morning after that folowed by days of rank nappies - today he has passed a fine poo and seems back to his old self - it took a good 5 days i would say but they are all different as are all bugs - he slept alot and was very needy, i had the same time but was just tuther end [blush. Encourage to have drinks anyway you can - we gave him all dd school drn bottles for novelty factor and he had some sips that way. ALso hismilk irritated him more so for bed time we watered it down so 6 oz with oly 3 scoops iyswim.

Thanks nappyzone. Glad to hear DS better now!
Will just have to hope she can at least keep her milk down tomorrow as there isnt much to her now! Luckily her 'milk' is Neocate so at least we dont have to worry about the lactose issue.

hi, my dc has it too!!! he is already skinny and is losing even more weight...quite worried...what else can i give him???

avenanap · 20/02/2008 22:28

How long has he had this for and is he still peeing? Is he lethargic? Was he a prem? Is he underweight?

lalatele · 20/02/2008 22:33

he has had it since monday...lost appetite completely(not even crisps or ice creams!!) he is still playing but does not walk very straight(20 mths)..he is underweight(9th centile) but normally very healthy(except from runny nose) and runs everywhere...sad to see my baby like this! was term baby, 50th centile to start with... but slowly gone done although hv and Drs not worried...as he is so active and happy...

avenanap · 20/02/2008 22:49

Monday should be ok as long as he is able to keep fluids down but I'd be tempted to nag the GP again if he's not feeling any better by tomorrow afternoon. His body is working very hard to get the bug out of his system, the hv's are supposto query any child that has droped 2 centiles, has your son seen a paediatrician? A healthy toddler who is active will burn off alot of energy, this is nothing to worry about. When he has stopped vomiting and is taking fluids, try him on some toast and see how this goes. There's no hurry, build it up from there. Does he normally stop to eat?

lalatele · 20/02/2008 23:39

he is quite a difficult eater hence his weight but he has never been that difficult!!!Almost lost my temper!!!(or maybe have lost my temper)am actually taking him to gp tomorrow although know he will be useless as useless(that one.///)

avenanap · 20/02/2008 23:42

You need to stay calm, it'll upset him and make things worse. My little brother never used to eat, he was referred to a paediatrician and was given build up milkshakes. i don't know if they do this anymore though. Your ds probably needs a few days to get his tummy feeling better. What does he normally eat?
