Heat Exhauation/Heat Stroke

Just posting this for a bit of advice/peice of mind. I'm in Cape Verde for 2 weeks (currently 8 days in) and a couple of days ago I started losing my appetite and feeling a bit sick. I took myself to the room and laid down for a few hours, couldn't eat and soon after was sick. I realise I had given myself a bit of heat exhaustion/heat stroke and that night got a really bad temperature and was cold at the same time. I slept it off and the next day (yesterday) I managed to shake off most of the symptoms and felt better in myself although still no appetite and stayed in bed all day and kept getting stomach aches, needing the toilet more than usual and I even got really awful mid back pain. Wake up this morning feeling generally in myself but still can't eat. I can only stomach small snacks throughout the day like Crisps and a some bread and butter. Guess I just wanted to know if anyone had similar experience and how long it it them to get their appetite back as its starting to ruin the holiday and making me so tired from not eating much. Obviously learnt my lesson and have spent time in the shade since!

heat stroke is a medical emergency and if you have it you need to be in hospital

StephP47 · 05/05/2023 22:02

I'm completely fine in myself now, I appreciate it initially it can be serious! It's mostly just loss of appetite and some stomach pains I'm still struggling with.

Sounds like it might be COVID, the fact that you'd been in the sun might be a red herring. Can you get hold of a test?

I would definitely seek medical advice if things don't improve tomorrow. I have recently had stomach issues and bad pains and turned out it was an appendicitis.....

I've had these exact symptoms in the uk in the last few weeks. Haven't done a covid test but confident it's not hot enough to be heatstroke. If you def think it's that you need medical assistance x

I've had all these symptoms when I've had heatstroke before, think it took me 3-4 days to feel over it

PrincessofWellies · 05/05/2023 22:32

Try to drink loads of water, you should be feeling better after a couple of days. I was there in March, loved it.

I had these symptoms when I was on holiday earlier in the year. It was Covid.

Hey! I've been in a similar situation before, and it's tough when heat exhaustion hits during a holiday. It's good that you're taking it easy and staying in the shade now. It might take a bit of time for your appetite to come back fully. Just keep hydrating and listening to your body. You can read more about heat stress in this useful guide at heatstress.com. It helped me a lot. Hang in there, and I hope you feel better soon!

Do you have any of those electrolyte sachets/tablets?
