Blood pressure checks at pharmacies?

8 replies

I'd like to have my blood pressure checked, but my doctor is hard for me to access at the moment. I was under the impression this was something you could have done at most pharmacies, but upon googling all my local pharmacies only talk about free NHS testing for the over 40s, which I'm not. There's no mention of any service (even paid for) for the under 40s.

Would I be able to get a blood pressure check at a pharmacy as someone under 40, does anyone know? Thank you!

Lloyds pharmacy seems to offer it but charge around £7.50

Or buy your own monitor and do it at home

Boots no longer do it

Suggest buying one off Amazon for £25

That's good to know, thank you. I don't have a local Lloyds, unfortunately.

There is a national scheme and it looks like you may be able to have your bp taken if you’re under 40 but it’s at the pharmacists discretion.
Here are some on the inclusion criteria

  • Adults who are 40 years old or over, who do not have a current diagnosis of hypertension;
  • Patients, by exception, under the age of 40 who request the service because they have a recognised family history of hypertension may be provided the service at the pharmacist’s discretion;
  • Patients between 35 and 39 years old who are approached about or request the service may be tested at the pharmacist’s discretion

Buy a home blood pressure machine but check out British Heart Foundation website for recommendations because we had one for DM and it was frankly hopeless because we got a cheap one off Amazon first time around x

Thanks @Baboutheocelot. I have a couple of local pharmacies who are offering the NHS scheme. As I'm over 35, I guess I'll roll in and try my luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions about home test machines, but I'm not sure I need one of those. My blood pressure might be fine, in which case it'll be rather a waste.
