Malignant polyp found during sigmoidoscopy

My lovely dad had a sigmoidoscopy yesterday which showed a polyp. The report apparently says it is large and appears malignant (although I haven't read it myself).
He's to go back next week for a full colonoscopy but I have some questions that I would like answered sooner if anyone has any insight.

  1. they weren't able to remove it during the procedure, is this a bad sign that it has spread outside of the polyp?
  2. everything I'm reading says that polyps take years to turn malignant - he had a stoma reversal in 2021 and nothing was seen then, so how is it possible this is cancer already? One website said 10 years for them to turn cancerous.
  3. if the cancer is contained within the polyp will he require more than just having it removed?

I'm not expecting personalised advice, just if anyone has a general idea...
