Seem to be having a little trouble in tis department at the moment.

I dont drink water as I dont like it, but drink loads of rooibos (redbush) tea, which I have heard is just as good.

Dont really eat fruit, but eat loads of veg.

Also I daily eat a mixture of seeds (linseed, sunflower, pumpkin).

I take fibersure 3 x daily in my tea.

I am on a low carb diet, but take multi vitamins to try and combat anything I might get deficient in.

I have suffered from irritable bowel sydrome in the past, so this could be a flare up.

Any advice would be great, thanx

I would drink water with a bit of squash or juice in it, and make yourself eat a bit of fruit. I would also eat more carbs, wholegrain type things, as personally I believe they are much better for you than things like fibresure. Plenty of water and plenty of fibre should get things moving. Alternatively there's the quickfire German recipe, a cup of black coffee with two teaspoons of butter stirred into it... best of luck!

HuwEdwards · 17/02/2008 18:44

dried apricots

cup of strong coffee (vomit emoticon at butter!)

long term I don't know
but for instant relief ..very odd suggestion warning

go to a library tomorrow morning
i know it sounds odd
but whenever I went to a library always felt the urge then believe it or not I read something (dr james le fanu in the telegraph) which confirmed it

this works with lots of people if you've been bunged up a while (also bookshops)

scuse punctuation lack of

i swear by lactulose, I love it. Its called poo-juice in our house

I only need it for a couple of days it seems to regulate me again quite quickly

FrayedKnot · 17/02/2008 18:52

I have intermittent problems with this kind of thing and when things get bad I take psyllium husks which you can get from a healthfood shop, you mix them with water, it doesn;t taste great but you just drink it all in one go.

They are just as effective as fybogel etc but much less aggressive, I find, and none of the additives.

Also, I second trying to eat some fruit and try and drink some water, even if you don;t like it - or try hot water with lemon and honey?

I find bread and otehr wheat makes me worse especially things like pizza and pasta - so I eat mainly wheat-free stuff - and always have a bowl of meusli in the morning and also oatcakes instead of bread.

HTH, I know it's miserable even when you think you are eating quite healthily.

posieflump · 17/02/2008 18:54

if you don't like fruit have you tried smoothies?
as soon as you wake up have hot water with lemon and then branflakes or a cereal with linseed sprinkled on

FrayedKnot · 17/02/2008 18:55

Also, make sure you are drinking at least 8 cups of herbal teas etc a day

CoteDAzur · 17/02/2008 18:59

Coffee & a cigarette - single best remedy ever.

If you don't smoke (and I don't either these days), a bowl of muesli & 1-2 fruits with milk in the morning. It works for me

poshwellies · 17/02/2008 19:01

Castor Oil...Works a treat

pinkdolly · 18/02/2008 07:05

Thank you for all the suggestions.
I find part of my problem is that not everything works for me. I tried senna tablets (nothing). I've been taking some fruit cubes from the health food shop for a few days (supposed to get things moving) nothing. So it's trial and error.

I will work through the things on this list and see if I can sort it out. And I will try harder with my water and fruit consumption.

Thanx

You really should drink water - several glasses of really cold water drunk straight are very good for getting your bowels moving, especially if drunk after a brisk walk (at last half an hour).

As other says, you also should eat fruit - lots of fruit has quite laxative properties.

meimango · 18/02/2008 12:01

eat two prunes a day - works a treat!

DrNortherner · 18/02/2008 12:02

Have a fag - that'll get things moving.

CatIsSleepy · 18/02/2008 12:04

dried apricots and lots of water

NaughtyNigel · 18/02/2008 12:05

I thought I was the only one with the library problem! am amazed that it is real!.
if that fails try
prunes
prune juice
syrup of figs
dried apricots
get a medical friend to threaten you with an enema - just the threat often works a treat

jenkel · 18/02/2008 12:21

I have a couple of mouthfuls of prune juice each night.
Also, Linseed (you can buy it in Tescos) I just sprinkle some over breakfast cereal.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 18/02/2008 12:27

being on MN works for me! (as well as the library thing. i think it's reading really)

TimeForMe · 18/02/2008 12:39

Prunes, Oxypowder (not of the laundry variety or, half a packet of sugar free polos

rebelmum1 · 18/02/2008 12:42

porridge for breakfast, and prune juice

Lazycow · 18/02/2008 12:57

prunes and apricots work for me. I'm not sure what fibresure is but this is what I take psyllium husks instead.

I get it from the healthfood store and it usually works within 1-2 days for me

SpacePuppy · 18/02/2008 13:01

dump the fibersure, it is probably bulking you up and as far as I know you're suppose to drink loads of water when you take it.

Prune juice?

ernest · 18/02/2008 13:21
