Toddler hit head, I’m panicking!

My DS 18 months ran and fell into a corner of a door frame, it looked like a hard fall. He was very upset but was okay after a few minutes. I’m so worried as the lump is large, I’ve attached some photos but they don’t show the lump, I’ve circled where it’s raised.

DH says because it’s his forehead it’s okay, and he’s been okay in himself (it only happened an hour ago). But he was so tired as he didn’t nap today and now he’s fallen asleep. I can’t stop crying as I’m so worried, but NHS website says to seek help if they have vomited etc, he hasn’t had any of those symptoms.

He is full of energy and often runs into things/falls over, he has another two bruises, small ones, one on his chin and one on side of his head. And I’m worried if I take him to A&E they will think I don’t look after him and take him away, but equally I obviously want him seen if needed.

What would you do?

I have four boisterous kids who have had all kinds of lumps, bumps and breaks over the years and I have an extremely high threshold for seeking medical treatment. If you have an urgent care / minor injuries close by I would definitely take him for them to have a look. It looks like a really nasty bump.

Hope he’s feeling better soon

All kids bang their head and get a lump, at some stage. The thing you need to watch is if he vomits, feels dizzy, or is very drowsy (unable to wake up properly). Other than that, give him Calpol and he should be fine.

I would get that looked at maybe minor injuries if you have one? It’s looks a nasty one, I’d do it for peace of mind.

honestly don’t worry about the other bumps and bruises, it’s normal at that age when they are busy exploring.

I’ve rang 111 and they are going to get a GP to call me back.

I just can’t relax at all. Thanks for your responses xx

Hey

mine did this three weeks ago. Exact same door frame.

it was on forehead. It came up like a tennis ball.

I called 999. Was alone with three under four.

they transferred me to 111. They were so calm. No blood so no stitches. No sick. No pass out. Try and apply ice but unlikely to let me. Give calpol. Watch as bruising would run down face over week which it did.

I am still having flash backs. But child fine. What a fright and what a bump. DC three as well.

My daughter did the same and had a lovely line down her head. They just said to keep an eye on her and if it had bled. Hope your little one better soon and big hug to you. It's scary

If he's asleep now, just check he is rouse-able every hour or so until you go to bed. Basically move an arm slightly, or the duvet if he has one, and check he snuggles back down - ie he is asleep and not unconscious.
The sleep on its own isn't a worry - because you'd expect him to be asleep now anyway.

FWIW, when DS got admitted for concussion, he had vomited, and vlacked out for a couple of seconds a number of times. He also didn't have a bump - the bump is good news.

Bless him. I don’t think you need to seek medical attention unless he is vomiting or difficult to wake, like PPs have said. My little boy has bumped his head so many times in the same spot that he now has a little dent there 🤦‍♀️

My 17mo had a corker like that a couple of months ago, it was awful! But he was absolutely fine and it cleared up surprisingly quickly.
