For the past 2 weeks 19 year old Dd has felt nauseous in the afternoon which is cured by having something sweet, today she has two starburst from a friend and then felt better.
She says she feels like she needs sugar.

Can people without diabetes get low blood sugar?

Is it worth trying to see GP?

Thanks in advance.

This is the opposite of diabetes, low blood sugar as opposed to high.

Eating snacks such as a piece if fruit inbetween meals could stop these symptoms, as well as a high fibre diet.

Just in case anyone mistakes these symptons for diabetes,
I have been T1D for most of my life and I can confirm there is no chance that this could be diabetes.

PinkPlantCase · 25/04/2023 20:05

Could she be pregnant?

Thanks I will get her to try and add some snacks,
I was thinking of hypoglycaemia.

Absolutely not the opposite of diabetes 🤦🏼‍♀️ there are more than just 1 type of diabetes, and yes - some mean blood sugar lows!

Can confirm it can be a sign of diabetes, and she should get seen by a GP. Not a definite diabetes, but equally, don't rule it out as an option.

And in the meantime, make sure she carries some snacks with her to help.

Lots of people who are not diabetic get low blood sugars. I often get it and need to eat regularly through the day. Usually with undiagnosed diabetes you would have high blood sugars as you need insulin to lower bloods.

Just want to add I know an old lifelong T1 diabetic who has always carried a quick sugar boost for emergencies when they go hypo.

It used to be Lucozade they carried but since they reduced the sugar in that he now carries a drink called Lift instead.

T1 diabetics do go hypo.

Get your daughter tested - at least HbA1c but ideally an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

Your friend’s low blood sugar is caused by the insulin he takes. It isn’t an exact science and it can sometimes result in too much being given causing low blood sugar.

I get this and so does my dad, both had bloods/urine tests and they said it's just our sugars drop quick. It helps if I make sure to eat protein regularly

For example I had
7am porridge with peanut butter and a banana
10am work break and 3 Jaffa cakes
10.15am threw up, fainted and blood sugar was about 2-3? Had a Mars bar and glucose from the paramedics (embarrassing---- when you work at an ambulance station) and they couldn't get my sugars up to a level they were happy with so had to go to hospital

I keep glucose tablets in my bag

You do know diabetes can cause high and low blood sugar!

Sorry wrong quote. Diabetics have high and low blood sugars, diabetes is when your body cannot regulate the amount of insulin the pancreas secretes!

Iminthemoneylife · 27/04/2023 13:10

Is she eating enough?

DelilahBucket · 27/04/2023 13:18

Chances are it's just a dip in blood sugar. Easily caused by a high carb lunch. I get this and the only way I've found to prevent it is with a high protein but very low carb lunch and nothing sweet.

ZombiePara · 27/04/2023 13:24

@Throwncrumbs made me panic then!

You are 100% right in your post - can cause high and low.
you said it far more eloquently than me 😅

Toddlerteaplease · 27/04/2023 13:26

I had this a while back. Always around the same time. I changed what I was eating for breakfast and it's not happened since.
