Colonoscopy - how do I find how good the polyp detection rate is

Im due a colonoscopy on Friday. I had one 3 years ago and 4 polyps were found. Last time I went privately and consultant said he had a high polyp detection rate. This time I am going on the NHS and I have an endoscopy nurse. I’m worried that as it’s not a consultant I may not get the same polyp detection rate. How can I find this out please

You do not need a consultant to do a colonoscopy. Your nurse will be a specialist who does colonoscopies day in day out and is likely to be more experienced than the consultant who did you previous one privately.

The most important thing is that you do the bowel prep as directed as this makes seeing any polyps much easier. Please don't worry about it being a nurse doing the procedure.

Thanks so much… I’m in such a state of anxiety. I had a really bad experience with a sigmoidoscopy, which was incredibly painful with a very unsympathetic dr who I discovered after hadn’t detected a polyp. I just want to get this over with and have condense that it was done well. I have a bad back at the moment and so I’ve convinced myself that it’s something sinister going on with my bowel.

Yeah the nurse endoscopists are incredibly well trained, and literally spend all their time in endoscopy doing them day in day out. Gastro consultants are doing hundreds of other things and not scoping all the time. Don’t panic!
