Had one from Aldi, katsu curry & was delicious! Never tried it before.
are they healthy? High in salt? I have high bp and try to avoid very salty foods.
twice a week ok?
avoid the flavored ones as less processed perhaps?
tinned fish both something we ate growing up (dad drove a fish delivery van and first delivery was our fridge)!

I love tinned mackerel, I like the one in brine from Asda (it’s the only place I manage to find it) - I love it on a proper jacket potato with loads of salt and mayo 😋

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/04/2023 20:20

Tinned fish is very nutritious.

Love it, I love tinned sardines on crispbread or toast and have it at least 3 lunches a week

MegCleary · 24/04/2023 07:40

What about the salt level and level of processing?

The label will tell you if there is added salt (I don't think there is any unless it has sauce). As for processing it is just cooked and you would normally do that anyway.

MadamClench · 24/04/2023 08:04

I love it. I mix it with some lemon juice and pinch of lack pepper on any kind of toasted bread with cherry tomatoes on the side.

TheKobayashiMaru · 24/04/2023 08:07

I eat a lot of tinned mackerel

Maraudingmarauders · 24/04/2023 08:12

I think those in sauces.probsbly are quite high in salt, if possible go for tinned mackerel in spring water as lower salt level. They can't be too bad as toddlers can eat them as part of weaning, but salt does feature so I'd check each tin as each brand will be different.

I loooove tinned mackerel on toast with fresh cherry toms.

SoftCoeur · 24/04/2023 08:31

I love the ones just in olive oil, had a tin for lunch yesterday 😋

What about the salt level and level of processing?

You'd need to look at the ingredients/nutritional info for the salt levels

I really like the skinned sardines with chilli, M&S and Waitrose do them. Lovely stirred into pasta with rocket and cooked cherry tomatoes.

EggInANest · 24/04/2023 08:52

I love tinned mackerel and sardines.

I buy the ones in oil if no spring water ones available.

Not really processed, just cooked, if you buy the ones in oil.

Though the sauce might be additive central, look on the tin.

I love them on baked potatoes, on toast, with salad, you can use them in loads of recipes.

Laffinalltheway · 24/04/2023 10:23

Love them, and the ones in water or oil are low in salt and very good for you. I prefer the ones in sunflower oil, but drain as much oil away as possible, then put them in a sandwich using brown bread and a load of salad leaves, cucumber etc. Sardines too...

Crikeyalmighty · 25/04/2023 13:38

@Laffinalltheway I like them on gluten free crispbread - I could eat it every day!!

AgathaX · 25/04/2023 13:57

Mmmm the tinned mackerel in tomato sauce is delish on toast.

Agreed, but that's where the salt contents comes from...
