impacted wisdom tooth - is this awful pain normal?

last month i went to see dentist who said my teeeth were great except i have a wisdom tooth that hasn't got room to come out. he recommended i book in for removal under GA at the hospital but it would take weeks for appt to come through. i chickened out and didn't book it as my tooth wasn't botherin me then.

two days ago I started getting horrible pain in my jaw and all the way up my face to my temple. The pain in my head was honestly worse than childbirth. Now the headachey thing has worn off but i have pain in all the teeth on the right hand side of my mouth. it is agony if i try and touch my teeth to brush them and i have been up all night for last two nights.

now i can barely speak and painkillers aren't touching it.

the worst bit is my dentist is closed for the weekend and we are supposed to be flying to Disney Paris in the morning for the dc's half term.

please can somebody come to my rescue with some nice real life examples of teeth that stopped hurting ON THEIR OWN?

even if i cancel hol, i don't know if there is anything dentist could do until my extraction appointment comes through in 6-8 weeks. i don't think i can live with it that long...advice please?????

if you go to A&E the dental clinic there should be able to give you some serious pain relief. but you really should book that appointment.

IME not normal no. I had an impacted wisdom tooth and it never gave me any trouble. Not until they removed it under local anaesthetic, that is. I shudder at the memory of crazed laughing dentist with his knee more or less on my chest yanking out the tooth with an instrument bearing a strong resemblamce to a pair of pliers. It was like something out of Stephen King. It's the closest I've ever come to passing out from pain and in retrospect I think he deserved a good dose of vomit down his front (but I'm much too ladylike).

Sorry. Don't suppose that helps. Go for the GA.

crikey, it sounds like an infected wisdom tooth - the abcess can spread inside the bone and be very painful

you need antibiotics IMO, if you phone an emergency dentist they will come out to you if necessary

PerkinWarbeck · 16/02/2008 08:33

oh lord, midnight express, that sounds awful. have opted for sedation only as my fear of GA is possibly greater than fear of Marathon Man type experience. the phrase "drill into the bone to break the tooth" has come up .

Try and get to see an emergency dentist. It may be that you have an infection which is causing the pain, if not you will at least be able to get them to give you some decent pain relief.

FrannyandZooey · 16/02/2008 08:33

meanwhile gargling and rinsing in VERY hot salty water, as hot as you can bear in your mouth, will give some relief and also fight the infection to some extent

I have recently had problems with my jaw, very much like the pain you describe and yes it is far, far worse then childbirth. It does sound like neuralgia, perhaps the tooth is affecting the nerves?
Get it taken out.

Go to pharmacy - there is some gel you can put on tooth and gum which works a bit, but they will also advise on pain meds and anti-inflammatories, you may be able to take more than you are doing.

gemmiegoatlegs · 16/02/2008 09:00

don't think i can take more painkillers than i already am! i've been alternating between ibuprofen (to ease the inflamnmation) and paracetamol and codeine! I think i will check out emergency facilities at the hospital - i am really worried about feeling this bad on holiday

A dentsits can prescribe stronger gemmie, after my widom teeth removel (all 4 under GA) I developed dry sockets, and yes that too is far more painful than child birth and they prescribed me some wonderous extra strong pain killer which made me so woozy I slept for about 5 days - much more preferable to being in pian though

You need an emergency dentist. And book that extraction.

gemmiegoatlegs · 16/02/2008 09:13

i am definately going to book the extraction - in fact i feel like pulling the damn things out myself! I have got the no of the emergengy dentist and i will be phoning them a\s soon as dh wakes up (night shift, not laszy!)
thanks for the replies, its nice to feel less alone in my misery!
