Blood pressure - help please

This is a bit long winded, but my anxiety is very high and I feel like crying. I don't feel understood when I've tried to talk to various GPs over the last year, so please offer any advice if you can bear to read it:

  • I have always had bad white coat syndrome, and after a routine appointment last year where my BP was very high, I was asked to do a 7 day monitoring form at home.
  • The result of the form was 133/90, and I had several tests done. The GP said it should be below 135/85 at home, and that because I am young (40) it was best to treat aggressively, and I was prescribed 2.5mg Ramipril. He said this would also protect my kidneys etc.
  • Due to some sort of mix-up, when I collected from the pharmacy, I'd actually been prescribed 5mg. I queried this with GP and they said it was fine, take this because we'd review in a few weeks anyway.
  • After six weeks, I had a review and they asked if my BP had come down. I said not especially, and it was put up to 7.5mg.
  • My BP did come down to 117/77 for the next review, and I've taken 7.5mg ever since. Just recently, my BP seems to be creeping up again, and the average this month has been 124/88.

My concerns are, as my BP now is not much different to what is was before the medication, why am I taking it? It could be causing damage to my kidneys (I've googled this and frightened myself) unnecessarily. I know my BP isn't perfect now, but it's not much different to before medication.

And also, is it usual to be medicated for this borderline high BP? Shouldn't a low dose have been enough, when it was only a little bit high, or is that not how it works?

If anyone can help calm me down, I'd appreciate it. I know these are all questions to ask a GP and I have, but it's a different person each time, and they're in a rush and don't seem to listen properly.

This explains about BP treatment pathways.

Do you exercise in a way that gets you into the cardiac zone? This always brings my BP down and when I slack off my BP rises.

Are you doing all the things you should to keep your blood pressure down? Not too much salt, being reasonably active, maintaining a healthy weight...?

I've been on ramipril 10mg for about 15 years (not for high blood pressure) and my kidneys are ok. They like to do an annual blood test just to check but so far so good... It's a known issue but dont panic: probably your kidneys will be fine and if there's a hint of a problem they can swap you onto something else.

Thank you both. I've really got myself overwhelmed with worry. I know white coat syndrome is supposed to be at the doctors, but I feel like I have it at home as well - just the thought of having to do my blood pressure and see the result makes me anxious.

That link is really useful, thank you @Wc100423 . It does actually say that if clinic pressure is high and home BP is slightly high, to diagnose, and the choice to medicate seems to involve a lot of judgement.

I feel like my BP is creeping up and maybe I need a higher dose, but also that I want to be on a lower dose because my BP was only borderline. I know that's paradoxical. I actually feel ill with thinking about this tonight!

It's only borderline high, OP. You'll do yourself more harm worrying about it than just taking one step at a time.

See what the GP thinks but this is something that can be managed rather than something to freak out about. Best of luck.

I am in much the same situation as you! Even the thought of taking my BP sends it soaring and I'm very reluctantly taking medication. Left to itself my home readings are 140/94 but my pulse rate will be over 120 so there is a considerable anxiety component in there.

The tablets bring it down to a level which keeps my GP happy but I don't feel particularly well on them. I'm permanently tired and have dizzy turns when straightening up suddenly.

Have you tried the 24 hour monitor? I am
the same and even got some "white coat" readings with that, but my average was a lot lower than I expected (and skewed by 2 very high readings)
