Wisdom teeth - scared

snowbellsxox · 16/04/2023 08:46

I'm due to have all my heavily filled and decayed wisdom teeth out soon
(Hyperemesis caused them to go completely bad) and they have only become worse since.
I've been offered GA if I want but I'm terrified to be put to sleep.
Anyone think I'll be ok to just have local?
It's four teeth with the two bottom being impacted.
Also, any dentists on here know why they've done a cold test on my top molars after looking at my scan? I'm so scared I'm shaking.
Thanks

If you are having all four teeth out at the same time you need a GA. That said, very few dentists this now as they have to an anaesthetist present so if you want it you have to tell them in advance. I had all four out at the same time but in hospital. I wouldn’t have four out at the same time while awake. Take into account that you will have to have quite a lot of injections just to numb all the gums. Better off asleep. Nothing to do it - they ask you to count down from 10 and you are asleep before you get to five. Good luck

I had all 4 under GA, dh had 2 as well on GA

I’d take the general, honestly that’s nothing to worry about. You are likely to feel sore afterwards though, stock up on soft food and painkillers, and try to schedule an easy few days post extraction if you possibly can.

I had all of mine removed in my early 20's due to their position and impact on my other teeth.

Upper and lower removed from my right side in one appointment and then the left side was done around a month later. These were done at my usual dental practice with local anaesthetic. The appointments was in the morning and I went back to work afterwards.

This was 30 years ago though so things will have changed no doubt. What I am trying to say is that there is a strong chance that it won't be as bad as you think.

I had mine removed under local, two at a time a week or two apart. I wouldn’t recommend it. You don’t feel pain but you do feel the pressure and they’re not always the easiest to remove. You seem like a very nervous person so I think you’d be better off asleep. It always surprises me that people are scared of being asleep, when they do it every night!

Take the GA.
If they are impacted they might break them and take them out in bits rather than try to get them out whole.

ACynicalDad · 16/04/2023 09:26

I had 3 out under local, I only had one upper, that came out easily, lower were impacted and took longer. Could feel shoving and pushing, no pain until the anaesthetic wore off. Don’t think I’m particularly brave but not nervous either.

Thank you everyone. I'll probably take GA but I'm so nervous never had it before. Reasons are scared of not waking up, lack of oxygen to brain (rare cases) and me choking and them not knowing.
Sounds extreme doesn't it Blush

You should get a chance to speak to your anaesthesitist beforehand and can let them know your worries, it's not unusual to be worried and nervous. Its worth having them out though, DH only had a gentle knock to one of his he was waiting to have removed and it split- he was in absolute agony. Much better to have them removed under GA and then have a planned recovery.

snowbellsxox · 16/04/2023 09:40

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. I'm definitely nervous when it comes to anything tooth related. It does sound like GA would be best Smile and I'll speak to them beforehand too just to let them know

Anaesthetists train for many years and here is a whole team looking after you and monitoring you at all times. What you are describing never happens in real life, only in fiction. It is a bit extreme to think you are so special and different. I don't mean that in an unkind way, I just think it would be more helpful to think about it rationally.

snowbellsxox · 17/04/2023 12:43

I know, I don't think special of different I think it's just thinking the worst when I know things can happen in our daily lives etc.
I know it's something I need to work on! I'm like this with driving too Blush
Not sure how to get around the nerves. I'm sure I wasn't like this when I was younger! I'm 30 btw. I really don't know why I've ended up like this lol
